AUDREY MILLER Obituary

MILLER, AUDREY MARIE Feb. 20, 1911 to Dec. 18, 2010 Marie and her late husband Earl both grew up in Arp, Texas. They left for California in 1928 to begin 77 adventurous years together. That road trip to California, in a Whippet, in itself was an epic journey ultimately leading them to San Diego. Marie was a full time homemaker and mother while Earl began a career in the grocery business. He managed the A&P store at Fifth and Nutmeg before starting a partnership with Henry Boney in the early '40s - Boney's Markets. This led to other ventures including aviation which expanded their world to the mountains and to the desert. At 48 years, Marie decided it was her time to obtain a BA degree. President John F. Kennedy spoke at her San Diego State commencement on June 6, 1963. Marie loved Mammoth and Borrego. She taught her grandchildren the art of tying flies while Earl taught them the art of catching elusive trout in the many lakes around Mammoth. They enjoyed exploring Borrego in their vintage Willy's Jeep. Living in the same home on Fuerte Drive in La Mesa for over 50 years they delighted in supplying their children, grandchildren, and friends with fresh flowers, home grown fruit and vegetables - realizing their East Texas agrarian roots. They were both active in their church, Scott Memorial, and supportive of missionary organizations including Wycliffe Bible Translators and JAARS. Marie, bedridden for the last few years of her life, always welcomed her many visitors with a warm smile and loved sharing her memories of 99 years. Marie is survived by her three children, Robert, Audre, and Charles, nine grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. Marie survived her five brothers and sisters, all who lived in Texas. A memorial service is planned for Saturday, January 8, 2011, 11:00 a.m., at the Salli Lynn Chapel, Greenwood Mortuary, 4300 Imperial Blvd. A Celebration of Life will follow at The San Diego Yacht Club. In lieu of flowers, a contribution is suggested to the San Diego Foundation or the San Diego Hospice.
