A. GRINDLE Obituary

GRINDLE, A. WOODROW February 17, 1919 to Oct. 16, 2010 Aubrey Woodrow "Woody" Grindle passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 16, 2010, at age 91. Aerospace employment brought Woody and his wife Dotty from Chicago to Chula Vista in 1940. He was deeply involved in the Chula Vista Community Congregational Church as Treasurer and member of the Board of Trustees and Congregational Tower Board of Directors. Singing in the choir, playing bridge with the Church Couples Club, and pledging generously to the Church brought the Grindles joy. Employed by Rohr in Chula Vista and General Dynamics (Convair Division) in San Diego as an aeronautical engineer, Woody spent 32 years designing aircraft. Many people benefited from Woody's involvement with the Chula Vista Laubach Literacy Program and for over fifteen years he was committed to the success of the program. Bridge and crossword puzzles kept his mind sharp and he had a life-long fondness for animals, especially Shelties. Woody Grindle is survived by children Sandy Grindle, Margy Milner (Brian), and Dan Grindle (Michaela), grandchildren John and Rita Grindle, sister Lorraine Marr, sister-in-law Anne Grindle, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Dotty and siblings Adeline, Gene and Allen. A soft-spoken, caring human being with a quiet dignity, Woody was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. Devoted to God, family, and church, he lived a long and rewarding life. The memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 13, 2010, at Chula Vista Community Congregational Church, 276 F Street. Donations may be made to San Diego Hospice, Chula Vista Community Congregational Church, or Alzheimer's Association San Diego/Imperial Chapter.

I had the privilege of singing next to Woody for over 10 years at the Community Congregational Church. I learned to sing tenor singing next to Woody. Early on, I would hesitate my entrances so I could pick up my part from Woody. He always hit the right notes. Eventually, I became a better tenor, but I believe Woody played a huge part in teaching me how to hear harmony just by singing by my side. I'll never sing a hymn without thinking of Woody. I'll miss the man and the musician. Goodbye my friend.

I too worked with Woody under the English as a Second Language program. He was a very nice man. He had compassion for all people. I'm sure the Lord welcomed him home with "well done my good and faithful servant." Prayers to family and friends.

About 15 years ago I had the privilege of working with Woody when he was director of the 'English as a Second Language' classes held at his beloved church. He was so dedicated and caring, he made the classes joyful for all of us, volunteer teachers and students alike. Thanks to him a lot of people came to know another culture and learned to appreciate the differences. He will be so missed by so many. May God bless his family, we will keep you in our prayers at this trying time.
