BARBARA DIXON Obituary

DIXON, BARBARA C. August 11, 1917 to August 3, 2010 Barbara Charlotte (Ross) Dixon passed away on August 3, 2010 in San Diego, CA at the age of 92. Barbara was born August 11, 1917 in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, the Canadian city that was founded by her family. She was the second of four children of John Gordon and Minnie Mary Ann (Kern) Ross. Barbara's father, John G. Ross was a Member of Canada's House of Parliament. Her grandfather, Senator James H. Ross was Lt Governor of The Yukon and Senator from Saskatchewan. Barbara attended the University of Manitoba, won the 1939 Canadian University Women's Discus championship, graduated in 1940 and then worked as a Dietitian at Montreal General Hospital. On February 21,1942 she married Howard H. Dixon at Christ Church Cathedral, Vancouver, Canada. The papers touted: "from the Atlantic to the Pacific, National interest centers on the wedding of the year uniting two well-know Canadian Families." In 1946 they moved to Santa Monica, CA, and while raising four boys was involved with the Santa Monica PTA, First Methodist Church, League of Woman Voters, Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. They moved to Costa Mesa in the 1970's and in 1999 moved to Del Mar, CA. Barbara and Howard enjoyed traveling the world, many times in their plane with Howard as pilot and she as co-pilot. She was an avid gardener, talented cook, and gracious hostess and she and Howard loved to dance. Keenly interested in Genealogy she traced the Dixon and Ross family history back 12 generations to 1575. Barbara is survived by her husband of 68 years Dr Howard H. Dixon, her four sons; Dr. Howard R. (Donna) of Coronado, Dr. Gordon (Cathie) of Solana Beach, Michael of Los Angeles and John (Deborah) of Moraga, eleven grandchildren Ross (Karla), Anne, Eric (Stephanie), Leigh (William), Lyndsay (Drew), Bryce (Patricia), Hillary (Brandon), Stephanie (Michael), Kyle, Keith and Grey and nine great grandchildren, Katelyn, Allison, Jake, Chase, Tyler, Austin, Gretchen, Jack and Henry. A Memorial Service will be held at Solana Beach Presbyterian Church, 120 Stevens Ave., Solana Beach, CA on Saturday October 2nd at 12 Noon. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation in Barbara's name to LightBridge Hospice, 5280 Carroll Canyon Road, San Diego, 92121, (858) 458.2992, www.lightbridgehospice.com

I will be thinking of all the Dixon family next weekend. What a pleasure it was to know Barbara and Howard. Maurice and I enjoyed visiting with them. It is a shame that we didn't get to hear about all the adventures they had in their long and beautiful lives together.I know every surviving Dixon will miss her very much. Sincerely, Joan Fitzgerald
