EDWARD BYRNE Obituary

BYRNE Jr., EDWARD JOSEPH May 26, 1945 to Nov. 20, 2010 Ed was born in Los Angeles, CA. He moved to Washington, D.C., Hawaii and the family settled in Allied Gardens in 1955. While in San Diego, Ed was in the first graduating class of Lewis Junior High. He did very well in sports at Hoover High lettering in cross country, track and basketball. He transferred to SDSU from the U. of Oregon at Ashland to complete his teaching degree. Ed taught at the junior and senior high level in the SD Unified School System and he received an MBA and a Master Teacher certification. He retired in 2003 from Clairemont High. Ed had many interests that allowed him to be outdoors. He loved sailing, skiing, RVing and camping, dune buggy adventures, photography, cycling, traveling, hiking and model trains. As a Padres fan, he enjoyed spending time at their spring training facilities in Arizona. Ed was a very caring and giving person to all who met him. It is fitting that because he had such a large heart in life it would be heart failure to cause his death. He was a kind hearted big "Bear" who took pride in looking out for his "little bears" and many friends. He touched many lives and was liked wherever he went. He is survived by his sister Mary Brothers (Leroy, his favorite brother-in-law). He was pre-deceased by his parents Alice and LCDR Edward Byrne, Sr. and his sister Kathleen. Ed requested that his ashes be scattered at sea and that family and friends wave goodbye from the shore. This will be at the Tunaman's Memorial on December 10th on Shelter Island from 11:30 to noon. A gathering of friends will be held at the Friars Village clubhouse afterward. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the charity of your choice.

I grew up with Ed in Allied Gardens. He was one of my brother Ron's best friends, and was always at our house. I called him "Kookie" because Edd "Kookie" Byrnes was popular on TV at the time. I remember Ed fondly, as he was a memorable part of my childhood. My condolences to his family and colleagues.

Ed was a very good friend, and we spent many hours sailing in San Diego Bay, and trips to the Mojave Desert including Death Valley, Superstition Mountain, and the Lone Pine area exploring old mining sites and ghost towns of mutual interest and off-roading in his dune buggy. He was a man of many outdoor interests which he enjoyed with his many friends.
"Captain, I'm really going to miss you!"

My sincere condolences to Ed's family.

I went through my Hoover years running cross country and track with Ed. All of the guys running track & cross-country had a great comaraderie together. Ed...he was the best of us!

Is this possibly the brother of Mary Byrne, arguably the best softball player at Marvin Elementary circa 1961-62? If so, I wish you my sincere condolences. Best wishes to you and the rest of your family as you adjust to what must surely be a gigantic hole in your lives.

I was so sorry to hear of Ed's passing. We worked together at Clairemont for many years. Eddie was such a sweet man. He cared deeply for all of his students. He was also lots of fun to work with and he would do anything to help you out. Take care, dear Eddie, you are in good hands now.

Ed Byrne was my wood shop teacher at Lewis Jr High for a year. (1973-1974) I might even still have the project I made in his class around here. Gentle giant comes to mind. Easy going, soft spoken. Someone you felt comfortable going to. I even remember an after school field trip he took us on to Fiesta Island one day with Sandy Hallum. Good people. Rest in peace Mr Byrne
