ELEANOR ENGLISH Obituary

ENGLISH, ELEANOR REBECCA Nov. 7, 1916 to Sept. 5, 2010 Eleanor English was born in Seattle to Archie and Ella McCallum. She graduated in 1934 from Ballard High School and maintained a lifelong friendship with her high school friend and Rainbow Girl buddy, Clara Eldridge. She attended Linden College in Oregon, then moved to San Diego and worked for Bell Telephone. In San Diego, she met and married a young Marine officer, Lowell Edward English. In the course of his 31 year military career, they lived in dozens of locations, although the first, American Samoa, was the most exotic and adventuresome. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Eleanor and the other dependents, were whisked off the island by a cruise liner in the dead of night, with nothing but the clothes on their backs. For the rest of her life, Eleanor loved nothing so much as traveling to foreign places, and even at the age of 93, still kept travel brochures on her desk with the hope of yet another trip. After a last duty station as Commandant at MCRD , Lowell and Eleanor retired to and remained in San Diego, which they loved, until the end of their lives. Together they had wonderful adventures and friends. They especially loved the annual group caravans to Baja for Thanksgivings of festivities and they loved to give hilarious themed parties for those friends. Eleanor was a bit shy, but had quite a twinkle in her eye, a wonderful laugh, and a love of fun and silliness. She was very creative and artistic, painting, drawing, sewing, doing needlework and working with stained glass. Above all, she loved to spend time with her family. Her nickname in the family was The Roadrunner, for the verve and zest with which she tackled all activities. She always wanted to keep going to see what was around the next corner or over the next mountain. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lowell, her brother James McCallum, and her niece Kathy Varjas. She will be lovingly remembered by her children Becky Crockett of San Diego, Bruce English of New York City, and Kay English of Seattle; grandchildren Kim, Stephenie, Jeff and Jennifer and great-grand-children Nick and Araceli as well as nieces and nephews Mary Brunstad, John McCallum and Jim McCallum. At her request, there will be no memorial service. Remembrances may be made to the Alzheimer's Association. The family are very grateful for the kind and loving care of Jackie Soto and Connie Vega during the last year of her life.
