ELIZABETH FUNSTEN OLIVER McCARTHY

McCARTHY, ELIZABETH FUNSTEN OLIVER Shelburne, VT, previously of La Jolla, CA. Elizabeth (Betty) Funsten Oliver McCarthy of Shelburne, 92, died on November 9, 2010 surrounded by her family. She was born in St. Louis, MO, the daughter of Edward Saunders Funsten and Gladys McNair Funsten. Betty graduated from John Burroughs School, St. Louis, MO and was a member of the Class of 1940 at Vassar College. She married Guy Williamson Oliver, Jr. who predeceased her in 1967. She married Roblee McCarthy in 1972. He pre-deceased her in 1989. She was also predeceased by her brother Robert Lee Funsten. She is survived by her son, Guy Williamson Oliver III and Pat Morris, of Santa Cruz, CA; her daughters, Judith Oliver Lovelace and husband Jeffrey of Essex, CT, and Elizabeth Oliver Scatchard, and husband Tom of Charlotte, VT; her six grandchildren Lea Gisele Oliver, Sean Funsten Oliver, Jeffrey Campbell Lovelace, Jr., Leah Oliver Lovelace, Brooke Oliver Scatchard, Ross McNair Scatchard; and her brother Edward Saunders Funsten Jr. and his wife Georgia of Santa Barbara, CA. Betty was an amazing role model; she held a strong faith in God, nurtured an appreciation of nature, a multitude of outdoor activities (Long live Kite Flying Parties!), encouraged giving back to one's community and opportunities to gather with family and friends. She gave us freedom and encouragement to explore and "test new waters." Betty continued her love of learning throughout her life. She valued and appreciated the restorative value of rivers, bays, lakes and oceans which she shared with her many friends and family. Betty cherished her relationships with friends. She made friends easily and instantly wherever she lived. A Service will be held at Church of the Good Shepherd, St. Louis, MO on December 11th.
