ELMER CARLSON Obituary

CARLSON, ELMER "PETE" Commander, U.S. Navy Pete Carlson, an Eagle Scout, decorated World War II fighter pilot, career Naval Officer, and father of six, died peacefully while surrounded by family on November 28, 2010 at the age of 87. Pete was born in Chicago, IL, to Einar and Alma Carlsen on December 22, 1922. He was attending the Illinois Institute of Technology in 1942 when he joined the Navy to defend his country and fulfill his dream of flying. This was his destiny since the age of 10 when he first started building and flying model aircraft. He was a member of the Greatest Generation. He earned his pilot "Wings of Gold" on January 5, 1944 and flew the F6F Hellcat during three major WWII campaigns that included the battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. His squadron (VF-34, or the Fighting Thirty Four) also had the unique record of having performed both the first and last carrier strikes against Tokyo during the war. During the battle of Iwo Jima, Pete had just landed his aircraft on the USS SARATOGA (CV3) when kamikaze attacks began, which resulted in him manning fire hoses and carrying the wounded to sick bay. Due to the battle damage, the "SARA" was out of action for the remainder of the war, so Pete was reassigned to the USS MONTEREY (CVL26) to continue the fight. The MONTEREY was just outside Tokyo Bay with hundreds of other ships during the formal surrender. Pete Carlson's flying career continued with service on seven aircraft carriers, additional combat during the Korean War flying the TBF Avenger, flying supersonic fighter jets for the North American Air Defense Command (NORAD), Commanding Officer of an aircraft squadron, and Executive Officer on the aircraft carrier USS YORKTOWN (CVS10) deployed during the Vietnam War. After retiring from the Navy in 1966, he worked for American Airlines, Rohr Industrial Systems, and RISI Industries, while earning his Masters in Business Administration along the way. He also briefly owned a bar called E.P's Tavern, and worked as a tax consultant and real estate agent before full retirement in 1986. Pete was a meticulous craftsman and the sky was the limit on what he could design and build in his garage workshop. When the table saw was finally retired, he was able to spend more time at his other favorite hobby, walking his dog Molly around Lake Murray and hanging out with his circle of "lake friends." He also loved to "make his rounds" around town to trade stories and jokes with his many other friends under the guise of conducting his daily business. His unique sense of humor was his brand of camaraderie, and it always made someone's day. Pete is survived by his wife Carolyn (Connie), daughters Carrie, Barbara, Virginia, and Christe, sons Tom and David, and his 8 grandchildren also known as his "little rascals." His ashes will be buried at sea in the Pacific with full military honors. Memorial arrangements are pending for the latter part of January 2011, and will be announced using the online guestbook. Our family is very grateful for the outstanding care provided by Del Cerro Manor and San Diego Hospice. Recommend memorial donations to S.D. Hospice.

Hi Pete, up there in Heaven,

Your family from E to Z are "leaving their marks" for you to see and to enjoy. They love and miss you too.

Say hello to those other pilots up there with you who we lost off the USS Mindoro: Hank Maloy (F6F), Charley Safanda (TBM), Mike Kane (F9F), Herb Hein and Jack Peterson.

p.s. Save a seat for me in that Ready Room up in the sky.

Happy 91st. Birthday Dad!

We are still talking about your bowls of ice cream, chocolate, oreos, projects, bad jokes, sneezing, those bad words with that extra ooomph and the love of flying jets for your Country.

Your kids and grandkids; Emily to Zoe are making and will continue to make their mark in this world. You would be so amazed at what each one of them has done. I can hear your "well hot dog" and "isn't that something" when hearing the news.

Love Carrie

Hi Dad,

A whole year has passed and it seems like yesterday. Thanksgiving was fun and food delicious but there were two people missing at that table and that was you and Virginia.

We raised a glass and toasted you both and we know you were there in spirit. Of course Tommy told jokes, Owen and Eden were hilarious with a skit, West and Zoe have grown so much and West is a super athlete.

Two of the first four, Mary and Christopher were there and you would be so proud of them, they are such great people. Brendan2 went north for thanksgiving and Barbara and Emily did not make it down but we all know that we are always together no matter where we are.

Thinking of you today.

Love
Carrie

Hi Dad,

Thought of you the other night while at a mass for Virginia. It is surreal that both of you are gone.

Everyone will be here for Thanksgiving and we will eat and drink enough for both of you as well as watch lots of football and raise many glasses in your memory.

I am sure if there is a CAL game on you will hear Brendan and Owen all the way up there!!!

Love Carrie

Dad, there are many things we will remember about you, but one thing that always comes back to me is how you made my first bike. You found all the pieces and parts and put it together. You painted it lavender with gold accents, put on a banana seat and the big upright handlebars with streamers. I think you made all our bikes. You made us those green toy boxes with the brass rivets all around and special hinges so they wouldn't slam shut on us. I remember how excited we were when you came home on the ship and brought us all transistor radios and the pinball machines! I used to put that radio under my pillow at night and listen to music...I know the pain of this life is gone now and you are at peace. You will always be in our hearts and minds. love, barbara

Grandpa- I am so glad I got to see you on Thanksgiving. You were your happy self as always making jokes. You had an amazing life full of adventure and I am so proud to be one of your grandchildren. I will never forget all the memories we shared including the time you saved my life by jumping in the pool fully dressed. I will always look up to you and miss you. You are forever in my heart. I hope you are enjoying a nice hot fudge sunday right now. Love, Mary

Connie, my heartfelt sympathy goes out to you and your family. You may recall, Pete relieved me as Operations Officer, and then as Executive Officer of the USS Yorktown in 1964 and 1965 respectively. In my view, Pete was the epitome of a true patriot who served his country with pride, integrity, loyalty and distinction often above and beyond the call of duty. Your unfailing support and understanding helped to make possible Pete's lasting contribution to the nation. May you find strength in Pete's legacy, and may God keep you in his loving care.

So sorry to hear at Mass last night about your loss. Pete was a fine man who was a joy to see and visit with at Lake Murray. As a Navy junior who became a Navy wife I enjoyed hearing stories of his exploits and travels. As one of six children I also enjoyed hearing stories of the young Carlsons' growing up years. I will miss his smile and the twinkle in his eye.

I hope that in the days and weeks again the family can take comfort and courage in their many happy memories.

Peace, prayers and blessings to you all.

To Connie and all the family from Charley Melville. I am sorry for the loss of your husband, father and grandfather.

He was one great guy to know; Pete and I flew together in Hellcats during the late 1940's in Fighting Squadron 3E. He was always the guy with the funniest jokes in the Ready Room and was the best teacher of fighter plane tactics to me as a young pilot.
I'll miss him but I know that he is in a place where all pains are gone and where all memories are turned on loud and clear. So he will be watching over all of his children and grandchildren, and especialy his darling wife Connie.

With love and prayers,

Charley and Gloria Melville

Lake Murrayites will long miss Pete, with his ever faithful Molly, who dictated which direction Pete would start his walk each morning. To his family, know that Pete was loved by all and will be sorely missed.
