EVERETT PENICK Obituary

PENICK, EVERETT S. "JUDGE" Lt. Col. USAF Ret. Nov. 23, 1921 to Nov. 17, 2010 Judge Penick, passed away November 17, 2010, after a sudden illness. He was born in Daysville, Kentucky, November 23, 1921, and was raised in Elkton, Kentucky, as an only child. Judge attended the Univ. So. Carolina and Univ. of Kentucky, earning a degree in electrical engineering in 1943. He joined the Army Signal Corps in 1944, where he met his wife to be, Phyllis, an Army nurse, while serving his country in Europe during World War II. He later served in the Western Pacific and Okinawa before the end of the war. Judge and Phyllis were married on April 6, 1946, in New York and transferred to Germany. Upon returning from Germany in 1949, Judge transferred to the Air Force and earned a Master's Degree in Guided Missiles from the Univ. of Michigan. He served for seven more years in the Air Force before moving to La Jolla, CA, in 1956, and pursuing a career as an aerospace engineer at Convair/General Dynamics working on the Atlas ICB. After retiring in 1982, Judge traveled extensively throughout the world visiting places he never dreamed he would be able to see. During his retirement years, he became an avid runner, participating in 5 mile and 10K events, and winning his age group many times even with artificial hip and knee replacements. Throughout his life Judge pursued his passion for sport cars and racing. He bought his first sports car in 1956, a 1954 Austin Healy 100-4, and participated in many vintage races in the '70s and '80s with his Healy and later a 1966 Lotus Elan. He was one of the original factory Subaru drivers running the Baja 500 and 1000 races for many years in the '70s and other vehicles in the '80s with Mag 7. He won the International Conference of Sports Car Clubs ITC Championship in 2003 in a Honda Civic at the age of 81. Ten days before his passing, he was in Las Vegas at an Acura NSX event and participated in a go kart race. Judge also volunteered with the Registrar of Voters as a precinct inspector for the last 11 years. Judge lived life to the fullest and will be missed by his family and friends. Judge is survived by his special lady, Jackie Zustiak; sons, Jeff and Steve Penick; grandson, Daniel Penick; granddaughters, Robin Dowsett and Jeri Kohlin; and great-grandchildren, Lyle and Faith Dowsett, Blake and Chauntel Kohlin and Kylie Penick. An Honor Guard Service will be held at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery when an available date can be finalized.

What a "life, well-lived"! I never had the honor of meeting the "Judge", but, have heard is name mentioned, and several wonderful stories of his Baja racing days. Especially the "counter-weight rock to replace a lost wheel" that survived 300 miles in Mexico, but, not the scrutiny or humor of the CHP. The Magnificent 7 sends out its best wishes to his family and friends. Bill Thompson: President

I so enjoyed having Col. Penick pop into my office, almost everyday, with some bit of fun news and something to share. He is very missed around here at the Seville.
