FRANK SCHLOSSER Obituary

SCHLOSSER, FRANK P. October 26, 1927 to Sept. 1, 2010 Frank Palmer Schlosser, Commander, USN (Ret.), D.Sc., was born January 18, 1927, to Dr. Rudolph Oscar Schlosser and Mildred Palmer Schlosser in Chicago, Illinois. He died after a long illness at Collwood Terrace in San Diego, just 100 days after the passing of his wife of 59 years, Barbara. Frank graduated from Evanston Township High School and entered Northwestern University in 1944 at the age of 16. In July 1945, he entered the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, MD, and was a member of the 1949 graduating class at Annapolis. He served aboard the heavy cruiser USS ST. PAUL during its action in the Korean War. He later attended Submarine School and served aboard SPIKEFISH (1951-55), REMORA (1958), and as Executive Officer of ASPRO (1958-60). From 1962-64, he commanded SPINAX, based in San Diego. A gifted engineer, Frank received his M.S. from the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, in 1958 and his doctorate from George Washington University in 1973. He oversaw Polaris missile launch systems work for the Navy at Sunnyvale, CA, 1960-62. From 1964-67, he taught engineering at the Naval Academy and was Executive Officer of its Engineering Department. In 1967-68, he was Chief of Staff of a submarine squadron in Key West, FL. He retired from the Navy in 1972 after service at the Naval Ships Systems Command in Washington. In 1973, Frank and Barbara moved to the San Diego area, where they spent many happy years. They had a home in El Cajon for 24 years before moving to Marina Park in downtown San Diego in 1998. Frank was employed with Westec Services and successor companies until his second retirement, and also taught courses at National University. Frank is survived by his sons John and David Schlosser, daughter-in-law Susan Schlosser, and two grandchildren, Charles and Emma Schlosser. A memorial service is planned later this year at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery, San Diego.

As a former member of Westec Services, I was impressed by his professionalism. He was an important member of the Systems Division and held in esteem by all. Fair winds and a following seas.

As a former USS Remora crew member, I know the family of Frank will remember him in his loving memory as he departs on his "Final Patrol". Rest your oars, sailor.
