HARRY LANGFORD HALL Jr. obituary

HARRY HALL Obituary

HALL Jr., HARRY LANGFORD Harry Langford Hall, Jr., more commonly known as "Lang", passed away September 12, 2010 with his wife Faye and his two daughters, Lori-Dale and Elisabeth at his side. He was 72 years old. Lang was born at Mercy Hospital on March 18, 1938, the son of Sara-Dale and Harry Hall, Sr. He grew up in the Loma Portal area of Point Loma. He was a true native San Diegan who, except for his college and service years, lived in San Diego County all of his life. He graduated from Point Loma High School in 1956. He was a graduate of Menlo College. Following service in the United States Army, he returned to San Diego where he was employed as an investment manager for First National Bank for several years. He married Norine McKinny and had three children; Lori-Dale, Daniel and Elisabeth. When the marriage ended, the friendship continued harmoniously for the rest of Lang's life. In 1981 Lang married Faye Kitchen. They were married for 29 happy, productive years. Lang was one of the original founders of Rice, Hall, James and Associates, an investment management firm. Lang worked there as the trader until the firm grew and was sold to a much larger company at which time Lang retired. After his retirement Lang and Faye continued living in the Sunset Cliffs area of Point Loma for many years. In 2003, they moved to Fallbrook where they raised avocados. Lang had enjoyed his life by the ocean as well as his mountain cabin in Idyllwild, but he adapted easily to the country life. He thoroughly loved having friendly neighbors, working in the gardens, living with wildlife, and the outdoor activities. Lang always had an eye for a great horse and along with Faye, spent more than 25 years breeding and showing beautiful Arabian horses, some of which won national titles. Although he did not ride, he enjoyed being around the horses, attending and volunteering at the horse shows. A natural born people lover, no one could ever say a negative thing about him. Always hospitable, always affable and frequently hilariously funny, a better man never existed. He loved his wife with great devotion, he was a dedicated parent to his children and was maybe the world's best grandparent. He also thoroughly enjoyed his horses, dogs and birds and expressed his appreciation for animals by donating generously to causes like the San Diego Zoological Society. He was also an ardent supporter of the arts in San Diego. When stricken with brain tumors twice in the 1970's, Lang courageously not only survived but overcame the associated disabilities from the operations. For the next 30 years he enjoyed travelling to many other states and countries, raising his children, and then watching his grandchildren grow. He could frequently be found on the rail at a horseshow watching his horses and most Wednesday nights found him in the congregation at the Christian Science Church. He made friends wherever he went. He was an especially sweet guy who saw the good in everyone. He loved gardening, and he enthusastically enjoyed cruise ship trips. He was also a great fan of the San Diego Chargers and the Padres. Lang is survived by his wife, Faye, his son Daniel of Los Gatos, his daughters Lori-Dale Hall Birch of Solana Beach and Elisabeth Hall Fitzsimmons of Encinitas. Lang has six grandchildren; Courtney, Austin, Cannon, Malloy, Harlan and Brecken. He leaves behind a sister, Sally Tracht, and a step- grandmother, Ethel Hall. He also leaves behind a multitude of great friends, co-workers, and neighbors. He is preceded in death by his mother and father. At his request, there will be no memorial service. The family asks that donations be made to the Zoological Society of San Diego, Attn: Memorial Gifts, P.O. Box 120551, San Diego, CA 92112, or to the scholarship fund of Principia College in Elsah, Illinois.

To the entire Hall family,
Over the past twelve years or so, I have had the good fortune to become a close friend and colleague of Dr. Dan Hall of Los Gatos. Dan is, by far, one of the finest people I have ever known. And although I never had the pleasure of meeting his father, Lang, I now know why Dan is the way he is. As the saying goes, “the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree”. Just as Lang loved people, so does Dan. Just as Lang loved the ocean, so does Dan. And just as Lang loved his family, so does Dan.
Like Lang, I too grew up in Loma Portal and graduated from Point Loma High School. My first encounter with the extended Hall family was as a young boy some 45 years ago on dove hunting trips with the Mullen family where I met Vi and Dan McKinney after whom, I understand, my friend Dan was named. Following befriending Dan Hall came a long list of other wonderful members of Lang’s extended family including Kelly, Courtney, “little Austin”, Norine, “big Austin”, Lori, Elisabeth, Greg, Shannon, Susan, Gerry, Brian, Joanne, and Joe.
God bless Lang and God bless the entire Hall family

We have enjoyed knowing Faye & Lang for so many years, especially through our mutual love of the Arabian horses. I will always remember Lang at the horse shows, enjoying & commenting upon the classes and having a great time with Faye watching their own horses compete. This is an image that will always remain with us; he was a wonderful man and a joy to know. How he will be missed! Faye and family, we send you our deepest sympathy. Love, Carolyn & Dave

Faye,
I don't know if you remember me, but I do remember you and your brothers visiting my family when I was just a little squirt. I am Connie Vieths Simon (Sandy's little sis). I know Sandy has been in contact with you over the years and even got to see you a few years back and she keeps me informed about you. I was sorry to hear your husband died and want to express my sympathy. From everything Sandy told me it sounds like the two of you had a very special life together, and I am so sorry it had to end this soon. Take care of yourself and cherish the memories you have of your life with Lang.

I only knew Lang for seven short years, but I felt a lifetime of unconditional love that he expressed every single day. That love will continue to be expressed for ever in the lasting impression he made on countless people, including myself.

Dear Faye and Family,

We are thinking of each you in these moments of sorrow. May your pain be lessen by knowing that it is shared by Joseph and myself. Lang continues to live as we share our memories and feel his everlasting love. He is now free of all pain and struggle, truely his perfect self. Our love and prayers, Betsy & Joseph

In 1943, Lang and his sister Sally would trail Bob Mengar and me on their tricycles while we cut the lawn next door after school. Later, Lang, Sally and their dad Harry were stockholders in our company.

May you rest in peace, Lang

A really complete and perfect tribute to Lang, my very dear first cousin.
I have many wonderful memories of him from our early childhood when we would sit by the curb at age 3 and wait for the Good Humor Ice Cream man to our wonderful visit in September, 2009.
We will miss him very much.

I've known Lang for over 60 years, and I was saddened to hear of his passing....I'll never forget all the great parties at the house in Loma Portal in the 50's...I used to see Lang once in a while when he lived at Sunset Cliffs, and I still remember Fayes license plate.."langnme"...He was a good guy and well liked by all of us....Just another Pointer taken way too soon....My best to the family.... especially Sally and "Bitter".....Rest in peace old friend.

Lang: We were in the same class at PLHS - graduating in 1956, but I'm sorry I never got to know you until you married Faye. The story in today's paper says it all. Thanks for the memories.
