JACQUES de KERVOR Obituary

de KERVOR, JACQUES EDOUARD August 13, 1928 to June 24, 2010 Born in Vichy, France. Jacques was 11 years old when the Germans invaded France. He fought in the French Resistance during World War II. He immigrated in 1948 and served in the American Army Reserve for seven years. While in America, he continued to spend time in his beloved France where he always hoped to reside. Jacques was an inventor, artist, an owner of a French restaurant in Newport Beach, a fashion designer, photographer, and predominately, an industrial designer and developer. He worked tirelessly at designing models and prototypes for new products or redesigning and improving existing products. In the last few weeks of his life, he was working on a new sink faucet design for Delta, combat protective eye wear for the U.S. Military, and, while himself a hospice patient, he worked on developing hospice equipment for improving patient comfort. Jacques had many accomplishments. He designed one of the first single handle faucets used by Delta, marine equipment for Jacques Cousteau, a Jet diving fin for Voit, farm equipment for John Deere, models for Disney land, office equipment, televisions, and toys, including a walking talking robot. Apart from his freelance work, Jacques worked for Carolina Industries designing decoy tanks and airplanes for the armed forces and other military equipment, worked for C.B.S. toys designing toys, and worked for Ford designing one of the original Thunderbirds. Jacques split much of his time between an artist studio in New York and France. Later, he lived in North Carolina, South Carolina, and two years ago he moved to San Diego. Jacques was a proud member of the La Mesa Rotary Club. He is survived by his children, Jacques, Jean Paul, Marc, and Diane de Kervor, 12 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and many friends in France, Mexico, and the United States. A Celebration of Jacques' Life will be held on August 8, 2010, at 9:45 a.m. at St. John's Garabed Armenian Church, 4473 30th St., San Diego, California.

I remember Jacques. I met him at a party my mother gave in Salisbury one summer. We became friends. He gave me a little flask he claimed once belonged to Napoleon. He showed me his inventions and a collection of his fishing lures -- oh, and a robot he made from the ground up -- fashioning even its nuts and bolts. He attended a French I hosted and later returned for a few days. After he moved to California, we lost contact. He sent e-mail, though. He was very proud of his family. He loved speaking with children to hear their ideas regarding possible inventions.

Met Jacques thru the La Mesa Sunrise Rotary Club. He became a dear friend that we both miss very much. The photo is at Rotarians at Work Day in 2009.

I only knew Jacques during his brief time in the La Mesa Sunrise Rotary Club. Each Friday he would come early to the meeting, greet each person warmly and always was ready to help. My strongest memory of him was helping at our walk to raise money for African children. He couldn't walk, but he was anxious to do something to help, so he manned one of the rest stations for the walkers. I never forget his smiling face greeting each walker with a cold drink as they arrived and the nice spirit he gave to the event. My deepest sympathy for your loss.

I only knew M. de Kervor through his children. Knowing nothing else about him, it still reveals he helped create a lasting, rich, and beautiful legacy. My condolences to the family.

My deepest sympathy and condolences for your loss. I have known you all for many years and though we do not talk much you all are in my heart and in memories that we share together. I met your father a long time ago and it was very apparent how much he loved his family and enjoyed the time together. He was a good man and I know how it is to loose a father, a parent. It is said that we are not adults until we loose our parents. I know that it creates a big shift in our life when we loose a loved one that is so close and I wish you all peace in this reality. May God give you all peace in this, that you heal from this loss and that you find strength in his legacy, remembering him always. Ameen.

Regards, Kerry McCaskill
