JANIE PENDLETON Obituary

PENDLETON, JANIE R. April 8, 1929 to November 12,2010 Janie R. Pendleton, 81, was born in Santa Ana, California to Orlyn and Elizabeth Robertson. She was a third generation Californian. She graduated from Santa Ana High School in 1947 and attended Pomona College where she earned her BA in Psychology in 1951. Following graduation, she married John M. Pendleton on June 15, 1951. Janie and John spent two years in Boston, where John received his MBA from Harvard Business School. Then they returned to Santa Ana where they lived and raised a family. During this time, Janie was active in Assistance League, PEO Chapter GJ, and the Ebell Society where she served as an advisor to Junior Ebell. She was also a den mother for her son, Tom and a girl scout leader for her daughter, Judy. Their home was always filled with the love and laughter of their children's friends, many who considered Janie and John to be their second set of parents and Iovingly referred to Janie as Mrs. P. Spring breaks were often spent at the family beach house where she would think nothing of serving breakfast, lunch, or dinner to as many as twenty of her children's friends. Janie will be greatly missed by the many lives she touched. In 1978, Janie and John moved to La Jolla, California, the place they often referred to as Paradise. Because Janie didn't know many people in La Jolla, she quickly joined the La Jolla Newcomers organization, as well as the La Jolla Opera Guild. Later, she served multiple years as President for both of these organizations. A few years later, she also transferred her PEO affiliation to Chapter BR in La Jolla. It was through these groups that Janie formed the many close friendships she so cherished over the years. Janie grew up in the First Methodist Church of Santa Ana, but later transferred her membership to the First Presbyterian Church, also of Santa Ana. Janie felt strongly about having her family actively involved in a church and most of her children's friends' families attended this church. When she moved to La Jolla, she and John transferred their membership one more time to La Jolla Presbyterian Church. There they found a family of friends who shared their beliefs. Janie will be greatly missed by her loving husband, John, her son Tom and his wife, Kathy, her daughter Judy Bowden and her husband Gary, and the Bowden's three children, Christina, Johnny, and Emily. A Celebration of Life will be held in January, 2011. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory can be made to the Scripps Foundation or University of California, San Diego for breast cancer research or to the San Diego Hospice who so lovingly cared for Janie.
