Josh, saw a rugby clip on IG this weekend, smaller guy put a massive hit on a much larger opponent. I immediately thought of playing with you and Broom for the Colorado Springs team. We could always count on you to set the tone within the first 3 minutes of every game, truly inspirational. I hope you and your old man are enjoying a good hang, miss you brother.

Stern was one of the guys who first went over with me. I was the 18 year old and he was the old man. Yet he was entirely to young to be taken from us so suddenly. April 11, 2011
To the Stern family,
I would like to apologize for just hearing about Josh's passing today and even more for not staying in touch with him when we left the service. I was deeply saddened by this news and I want you to know that Josh was a wonderful person and shining example for the soldiers of the 1st Battalion, 8th Infantry Regiment and for the teammates of the Colorado Springs Rugby Football Club.
I met Josh during the middle of our first tour in Iraq. He immediately struck me as a calm, cool and confident veteran. He was constantly sought after for advice and life experience not only by younger soldiers but officers and NCO's as well. What impressed me the most was how educated and knowledgable he was on so many different subjects. Every time I spoke with him I learned something new and he was a really cool person to pass the time with. There are some people that you serve with that you're just drawn to and Josh was one of them.
When we returned home from Iraq, I got to see a different side of Josh which was equally as impressive. When I joined the rugby team, he went well out of his way to make me feel welcome and part of a another team. Josh was a sleeping giant in the sport. He would show up to games like it was another day at the office but when the whistle blew, Josh would immediately set the tone for our team. I pride myself in my ability to deliver pain and punishment upon the opposition but it was nothing like the fear Josh could strike in them. We would always joke that it would take Josh no less than 5 minutes to absolutely drill the biggest player on the other team and get a huge gasp of concern from the fans. He wreaked havoc on the pitch and it was awe inspiring. Not many of the guys in our unit knew how good of a rugger he was but some of my fondest memories were calling him into CPT Carter's office on Monday and making him recount the highlights of the game.
I feel honored to have served with Josh on the battlefield and the rugby field and I am not alone. Josh was an amazing soldier and an integral part of the War Machine. He was beloved by those who served in his platoon, and those who had the opportunity to lead him in combat.
I cannot imagine what you are going through as a family and I will not attempt. I hope that the Lord provides you with peace in your lives and just know that Josh touched many people in his journeys. He truly embodied the spirit of Bravo Company, "Relentless, Invincible".
Tonight I raise my glass to a very special Fallen Eagle...Joshua Stern

I knew Stern for several years in the Army, in fact, for awhile, we were both team leaders in the same squad working side by side. I've only just heard and still feel like someone made a mistake. He was a great guy and deserved many more years. He gave me a lot of support when I was still learning to be a team leader and is someone that I will never forget. I only wish that I had stayed in better touch with him these last few years. I never met any of his family but you have my condolences, he was a great person and friend.

I only met Josh briefly during his travels through Asia, but I could tell immediately that this was a man with a kind heart. It's unsettling that a person of such wonder and grace had to have his life cut short. I honestly didn't know Josh that well, but the unfortunate news continues to sadden me to this day, a testament to how wonderful this man must have truly been.

I am completely saddened by this news. Josh and I met in Vancouver, BC last year. He was only staying for 24hr so I made sure to show him the best of Vancouver. We went biking, partying and sight seeing, we had a blast! In that short time, I got to know an amazing person with a warm-hearted. We talked about pretty anything, life, dreams, travels. Josh has a great positive outlook in life and I'm really fortunate to have met him.
Josh and I kept in touch and I was even planning to meet up with him this past May but wasn't able to due to scheduling issues. If I would have known that that would be my last time spending time with Josh then I would have no second thoughts and drop everything to catch the next plane to see him. You will be missed Josh.

I was not great freinds with Josh; but what I did know of him I will always respect and admire. I have nothing but great impressions of him! I remember how tough and disciplined he was going back to our football days in high school. He was a leader through his actions...which the world needs more of.
I wish your family my heart felt prayers...Josh will be missed by even people like me who were not especially close to him. I am humbled and saddened and thank him for his service to this country.

I met Josh while travelling trough Vietnam. He was one of the funniest persons I've ever met in my life. We shared extremely funny moments together and travelling together with him was a joy.
I hoped that I will some day finally meet him again. Instead, I got informed about his death a couple of days ago and struggling with the tears in my eyes was a hard thing to do. However, it is comforting to read these other guestbook entries so that I know, that I'm not the only person who feels about Josh the way I do. We surely all miss him but still can be glad that we at least have met him. I'm very lucky about this encounter.

I don’t know how to start, I’m still shock that josh passed away couldn’t believe it; I meet josh when he visit Cagayan de Oro, January 2010, for couple of days. We have talked serious things about life; love life, his dreams ect ect! His really like a brother as friend you can trust. A very kind, honest person and a good listener, and he told me about enrolling photography when he come back to Colorado, in his second day I bought a “ Labrador puppet” He was the one helping to bring in my place. Because of him I meet new friends from the CS community in Cebu during Sinulog festival 2010. Oh my God, one month ago we email me each other and he said that his coming again on December in the Philippines, it's so sad feelings that his gone now, but always be remind in our heart, I promise I will keep your advice… I thank the Lord for giving me the chance of knowing him.

To my second family,
Jackie, Carl, Josh and Jack.
I speak for my entire family, when I say that you have all been a part of our hearts since we first met. From several Bar Mitzvah's, weddings, and children, we will never forget. There are so many memories I have, mentoring Josh and the Goldberger's; Jacob was always occupied with Young Republican's Club, that he would talk politics with all of us at 8 years old, and Josh would joke with me about it, and we found it funny...now I know why! Josh was an amazing man, who was the product of a great family and upbringing. He will never be forgotten...to all of his friends, hope you are doing well. To Jackie, as I mentioned Sunday, you will always be my "Second Mom."
