KARI NANSEN Obituary

NANSEN, KARI KRISTINE Kari was born in San Diego, October 23, 1961, and passed away October 30, 2010 after a sudden illness. Kari graduated from Patrick Henry High School in 1978 and from UCSD in 1982. She briefly attended the University of Madrid and The Paris Sorbonne in the 1980's. She became an International Art Dealer living in Tokyo and Paris traveling throughout Europe and Asia. After returning to San Diego, she attended two years at Cal Western Law School. She earned her teaching credential and taught in various schools in San Diego, including SDHS - IB program, LSI and National University. She most recently was an English instructor at UCSD, her Alma Mater. A gifted linguist, Kari was fluent in French, Spanish and conversational in five others. She formed a company, Nansen International, that donated hand painted canvas shoes. These were painted by local San Diego kids and sent to children in Africa and Mexico. The shoes were featured at the Art Walk at the United Nations center in New York and also many Art Walks in San Diego County. She was on the Board of Directors of United Nations Association of the USA, San Diego Chapter. Kari's wish was for cremation and was memorialized and her wonderful spirit celebrated by her closet friends and family. Kari is survived by her parents Hans and Jeanne Nansen, brother Hans Erik Nansen, and niece Katherine Jane Nansen.

I went to Pershing and Patrick Henry with Kari. I saw her while working security at the Charger Football games in the early 80's and went up to her and said," are you Kari," I think we went to school together. She asked me who I was and said,"yes I went to Patrick Henry." Well we talked for a few minutes and I said good bye . R.i.p Kari

Dearest Aunt Jeannie, Uncle Hans and cousin Hans Eric,
What awful sorrow at the loss of your beloved daughter, sister and aunt, my cousin Kari. She was so beautiful and accomplished, my heart warmed while reading the kind notes from people that knew her over the years in so many places. She touched many lives in her brief stay with us. I'm so happy to share these stories with my husband and son as well as learn that I have another cousin, Katharine.
God bless and keep you all-she was a shining light that will be with you always.

Love and Blessings, Laura, James and Casimir Jaworski

Dear Nansen family,
I used to know Kari as her colleague and friend at LSI - she was an absolutely amazing person with a personality that is hard to come by - always cheerful, positive, so full of energy with all the good spreading all around her. It is hard to imagine the world has lost such a person now. Please, be sure that Kari will not only be missed by me, but a countless number of people everywhere. I am so sorry for your loss.

Dear Nansen Family,
I was in Drama with Kari at Patrick Henry, and as all of us from the Class of 1978 turned 50 this year, I was fortunate to reconnect with her this past August at a mutual friends Birthday party. (She looked EXACTLY the same as when she was 18!)
Kari always lit up the room with her laugh and her vivacious personality. She was such a gracious and warm person and I was so happy to see her again and hear about her fascinating life.
I am so sorry for your loss and will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

I am so sorry I missed the Memorial for Kari. My cousin recently set up a facebook account for me and I was so happy to see Kari had requested to be friends and vice versa. I waited too long to get back in touch with her. We were in drama together at Pershing and at Patrick Henry. She didn't care that I wasn't popular - she was always so nice to me no matter what. Her kindness, her beauty inside and out, and her wonderful very distinct laugh is what I will always remember. My thoughts and prayers go out to her family.

I was a classmate of Kari's at Green Elementary, Pershing and Patrick Henry. Kari was always exceptionally beautiful (natural beauty), charming and kind to everyone. I am so amazed how many lives she touched in such a short time. My thoughts and prayers to your family during this most difficult time. Please know that the Lord has the Plan for each of us and we will be reunited in his glory when it is our time to go home again.

Dear Jeanne, Hans and Hans Jr. We never had the pleasure of meeting your beautiful Kari. Reading the Guest Book entries would make anyone wish they had. We have some idea of what you must be going through. Good memories and the knowledge that you will again be together someday helps. God bless you and keep you strong. We will be having a Mass said for Kari at St. Therese. Love and Strength to you all.

Kari was a sweetheart. I first met her when she was a cheerleader for Alvarado Pop-Warner football. She was always kind to me. I am so sorry for your terrible loss. I went off to the Navy after high school and sadly I did not stay in touch. May you grieve well for your dear daughter, and may the Lord grant you comfort and peace of mind in knowing that you raised her well.

To Kari's Family & Friends:
I worked with (and under) Kari at FLS MiraCosta, and was honored to call her a friend, even though I only saw her a handful of times since she left FLS. The last time I saw her was on August 29 of this summer where I was performing at the La Jolla Cove Concerts. It had been a couple of years since we'd met, and she was radiant as ever!! Her smile was truly special. I wish we had taken a photo together... Her passion for life and the brightness that she shared with everyone around her was a constant inspiration. We shared a love of world cultures and languages (she was the official interpreter for the French students during our busy summer programs), and I loved to hear her stories. She will be greatly missed and remembered. My prayers and thoughts are with her family and loved ones.

I met Kari 11 years ago at LSI and she was an immediate source of fun and wisdom. We used to take students down to Tijuana, throw beach parties for them, and create ordered chaos with Kari as the faithful leader. We lost touch after LSI, but I was happy to hear her calling out my name one day on UCSD campus, where she was exhibiting her amazing shoe project. Last April, she started teaching at UCSD and I got to see her smiling face more often. I had known her longer than anyone else on that campus, and her bubbly smiles will be greatly missed.

My most heartfelt condolences to Hans, Jeanne, and Hans Jr. The Nansens were like a second family. Their home was where friends would always meet to share love and laughs. Kari was the voice of reason in that household. She always had a smile that would light up the room. I am so sorry to hear of her passing. Hans, please call me when you can, Jimmy Fraser 760 580-3620

Kari was a friend and colleague. I'll never forget her beautiful spirit and her unique take on things. The loss to her family is unimaginable--I hope Hans, Jeanne, Hans Erik, and Katie will take some small comfort in the fact that Kari will be remembered by countless people all over the world, whose lives she touched. There are groups of people getting together everywhere to celebrate her life. Deepest sympathies and condolences.

To Kari's family and friends. Her smile, her laugh, her love of life will always be in my heart. Kari and I worked together at LSI and kept in touch through FB. We loved sharing our stories about Japan and I loved hearing about her pearl diving days at Sea World. She is a beautiful spirit forever in our hearts.

I met Kari in 7th Grade and was lucky enough to see her not too long ago in SD for a lovely hike in Mission Trails. She was a brilliant lady, very dedicated to her students, great wit -- we laughed a lot! My condolences to the family. I will always remember her as a very dynamic person. Very sad news. "She walks into a room and you know she's uncommonly rare, very unique, peripatetic, poetic and chic!"
