MAC CHATWIN Obituary

CHATWIN, MAC Born Bruce Macleod Chatwin on May 14, 1924 in Edmonton, Alberta and died on October 5, 2010 at the age of 86. Mac was raised and educated in Vancouver, BC and graduated from University of British Columbia 1950 with a BA in Fisheries Biology and Oceanography. During World War II, he served in the Canadian Navy and was on a destroyer actively involved with D-Day invasion of Normandy. He married Janet Louise Robertson on March 3, 1950. They lived in Nanaimo, BC until moving to San Diego in 1957. Mac worked as a fisheries research biologist in both Canada and San Diego in the salmon and tuna industries. His work took him worldwide. A true "renaissance man," Mac enjoyed a never-ending list of hobbies, including oil painting, baking, gardening,brick-laying, ham radio, westerns, and gambling. He was self-taught in both Spanish and Japanese. A jack-of-all trades, if it was broken, Mac could fix it. Or paint it, varnish it, bake-it-from-scratch, or knit it. He is survived by his loving partner, Shirley Sachko, daughters Jan Neil and Claire Walker, grandchildren Megan Parker, Sean Neil, Erin Lewis, Blaine Lewis, and great-grandchildren Jordan and Michael Parker. We will miss him most dearly. A celebration of his life will take place in November.

missing you

I thought I would try to find a reference to Mac and was delighted to track him down. It saddened me to learn that he had passed away. I enjoyed his memorial video very much. Mac was a friend, supervisor, and mentor while we were involved with the Fraser River Board 1960-63.
I have many great memories and photographs of that period. Allan Gill

We were very sorry to hear of Mac's passing. His visits here in Vancouver were always much anticipated and I've always looked forward to them. Ever since I was a little kid when he brought me and my brother authentic Davy Crockett water grenades--the kind that were used at the Alamo; to his latest visit when he treated all his Canadian friends and family to a great party, his visits have always been an event. He will be sadly missed.

Mac was absolutely amazing and could fix and/or make everything better! His smile would light up the room and his humor light up the burdens of life. No matter the health issues he faced, he never stopped living life to its fullest - setting the best of examples for all of us. Live life to its fullest, celebrate and make each day a little better for having been a part of it. I will miss you Mac (Fudd) and will continually strive to live up to the the standard you set!

I love you and will miss you very much grandpa. Thank you for always making me smile. I know you and grandma are together....dancing your nights away. I'll watch over your girls and always keep your other grandkids in line. Even though I wish you could have stayed just a little longer...I am happy that you are no longer suffering. I love you GRANDPA FUDD!!

I will always have fond memories of the ever-so-kind "Mr. Chatwin" as our next door neighbor. He was always gracious, even when we three boys were acting up (as boys are known to do). San Diego was a kind place to grow up with good neighbors like Mac. His smile and gentle character will be missed.

I didn't know Mac for a long time but I am glad that I got to know this remarkable man. My family met him through our friend Shirley. After Shirley moved from Nevada to be with Mac some of our family would drive to San Diego to visit Shirley and Mac. He was such a gracious host even though he was not well this last year. Always a smile and no complaints. He made us feel so welcome. We will all miss him and his wonderful sense of humor.

I knew Mr. Chatwin as a patient in our office. He was always so happy and upbeat. He enjoyed talking about camping with me as he knew that was a common interest. My daughter went to school with his grand-daughter. I enjoyed his visits to our office as he was always so cheerful and positive. He will be missed.

My family met the Chatwin clan when they first moved to the states all those years ago. After we lost both matriarchs Mac and my dad stayed in touch. Jan, please let me know when the celebration is planned. My dad definitely wants to attend. [email protected]

So many wonderful memories of Mr Chatwin! I'd like to share about his amazing gift of kindness- he built the cradles that my 3 children used as babies- as well as my nephews! Our cradle was damaged in a move and the moving company just wanted to give us a cash settlement because they were not sure it could be fixed- I told them that I could not give a price on such a precious memory! We sent it off to a carpenter and it came back perfect! I was overjoyed! It remains in my master bedroom on display, and waiting to be used by my grandchildren and beyond! Mr C was so friendly, funny, caring and patient! He will be missed by the Zarycki family! Blessings to Jan, Claire and families-

Mac and I were long-time friends, going back to Vancouver, working together at the Tuna Commission, and into our retirements. He was witty, clever, companionable and a good person to be with. Fulvia and I send our heartfelt sympathies to his family.
