MAUREEN CALDERON Obituary

CALDERON, MAUREEN PATRICIA Born in Hollywood, Calif., on August 2, 1923, Maureen surrendered peacefully to the demons of dementia on December 23, 2010, after a seven-year struggle. Following a peripatetic childhood, including 11 elementary schools, Maureen graduated from San Diego High School in 1940 and, some 20 years later, resumed her education, culminated by a political science degree from SDSU. Along the way, she managed to usher four children to adulthood. Maureen was fiercely proud of her offspring, reserving the right to criticize them solely to herself. Sons John, Tom and Patrick Nettles, as well as daughter Terry Meaney (Mike), will always be grateful for her insightful guidance. A feisty bridge player in her later years, who readily confessed to difficulty in masking disappointment with partners less artful at bidding, Maureen also taught adults to read in her Chula Vista home as a volunteer. The former wife of the late Bill Nettles, a 30-year SDPD veteran and the father of her children, Maureen was the widow of Nicholas Calderon, a prominent local educator who was at the forefront of San Diego Unified's ESL program. In addition to her children, Maureen is survived by six grandchildren: Tommy, Patrick and Jack Meaney; John Nettles Jr., Corey Ford (Steve), Meagan Stevens (Brandon) and five great-grandchildren. Per her wishes, there will be no services following cremation.

Terry, John, Tom, and Patrick. I remember your mom with John and I in Kenya in 1972. She seemed to have so much fun getting to know our American and English friends, and seeing all the big-game animals.

Maureen was a bright and talented lady, and so very very pretty. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you.

Maybe our parents are playing a game or two of Bridge on the other side. I'd like to think so at any rate.

My warmest love ~ Linda Shields Allison
