RANDAL BENT Obituary

BENT, RANDAL TWEEDY March 1,1949 to October 2, 2010 Randy Bent passed away on October 2nd of heart failure. His wife, Gwyneth, was by his side. Randy was a loving and devoted husband, father, and grand-father. He was born in Memphis, TN on March 1, 1949 to Jack and Virginia Bent. As the son of a Navy pilot, he spent his school years in various southern California towns, notably Palos verdes, Poway, and Coronado. He attended Coronado High School (Class of '67), where he met his high-school sweetheart and wife of 38 years, Gwyneth O'Toole. Randy graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1972, and then served at various duty stations on the east coast, from Georgia to Maine, but primarily on the nuclear submarine USS JACK (SSN-605) as supply officer. After leaving the Navy in 1979, Randy had a successful business career in San Diego, spending the last 12 years at ViaSat in Carlsbad, making many friends along the way. Randy loved sports all his life. In his younger days he loved running, tennis, racquetball, sailing, and as his heart condition limited his activities, he concentrated more on golf, playing twice a week with his good buddies. He served on the board of the Coronado Men's Golf Club, serving as president in 1999. He loved his Padres and Chargers and was an overall sports fanatic! Randy is survived by his loving wife Gwyneth Bent, his daughter, Courtney Bent, grandson Braden L'Heureux, brother Rex Bent (Trissy) and sister Rita Pearce (Mike), numerous devoted nieces and nephews and in-laws, and many, many friends. He was preceded in death by his 6-day old daughter, Jennifer, in 1975, and 29-yr-old son, Brian, in 2006. There will be a memorial service on Sunday, October 10th, at noon at the Coronado Community Church, which meets at Village Hall, near the corner of 6th St. and H Ave., Coronado. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to The Naval Academy Foundation, The American Heart Association, The San Diego Armed Services YMCA, or the charity of your choice.

Gwen,

I only this week learned of Randy's passing, while reading this month's Shipmate magazine. I also worked with Randy at Viasat more than a decade ago, and remember with great fondness a man who could bring a smile and good cheer to virtually any situation. Randy was blessed with a combination of genuine kindness and inimitable wit. He saw the good in all of us, and brought a spirit of warmth and compassion to every interaction. The world has lost a truly good soul. I am deeply saddened.

Please accept our deepest and most sincere condolences.

God Bless,
Tom

Dear Gwen, I Just learned Randy's passing. Much joy comes to my heart when I think of Randy. But as much Joy that come to me for the memory I have it is now tainted with the great sorrow that comes at the loss of what one can only consider a Really Good Man. A great guy with a big personality and zest for life. I had the fortune of working across the table from Randy while he was at ViaSat, he was as smart and capible as they come. I truly enjoyed not only the process with him but the art of the deal ,while getting to know him and learning of his family both personal and professional. This was a tool he used as a welcome diversion. Its with Great saidness but even Greater respect that I on behalf of my self my family and Levine Investments that i say, You and your Family are in out thoughts.

With Warmest Regards,

Dear Gwen,

I am SO, SO sorry to hear about Randy. As you know, my memories of Randy go back to high school days in Garden Grove in the mid '60s when the Bent family lived next door to us and I thought Randy was perhaps the most respectful and intelligent friend I had. Poor Randy, who volunteered to tutor me through Algebra, really had his hands full as I fought learning the subject at nearly any cost! Years later, when Randy was at the Naval Academy, he made sure to send his friends. who were out here on an Academy related trip, to meet me along with one of my friends. And only a few years ago when my dad passed away, Randy and I talked the morning of his service when he shared about losing his parents, and was so very understanding about losing one of mine. As we talked, it seemed as though no time had gone by. There were not as many contacts as I would have liked between those earlier years and last August when you, Randy and I spent the afternoon together, sipping Mimosas and having lunch on your deck. But I left with joy in my heart, having had a wonderful time and hoping to see you both in the next few months. Those memories will now be very precious memories I will carry in my heart forever.

Please give my condolences to Rex, Rita, and the rest of your family.

Dear Gwen & family,

I worked with Randy at ViaSat for several years. I would regularly see him in the gym riding the exercise bike. I also worked with his son who passed in 2006. Randy will always be remembered and his kindness is a reflection of his family. God bless you and yours during this difficult time.

Dear Gwyn and Family -- I don't think that we ever met, and Randy and I lived in different corners of the Bancroft world way back when. That doesn't make my sorrow at his passing any less sincere. As Classmates we all share a common bond. Please accept my condolences and prayers for you and your family in your loss and my fare-thee-well to Randy. -- Frank L. Gibson (Saipan, MP, USA)

I just read Randy's obituary. Too late for me to travel to the services. I had spoken to Randy a few months ago and knew his condition was not good. That doesn't make news of his passing any easier for me. I had the pleasure of working a lot with Randy for a number of years at ViaSat. My respect for him as a businessman grew to respect for him as a person and a friend. He was the best! I will miss you Randy, my man. I almost hope Navy will beat Notre Dame in 2 weeks.
