RAYMOND EGGERS Obituary

EGGERS, RAYMOND LEE Raymond Lee Eggers passed away December 1, 2010 at age 92. Lee was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, in 1918. He moved to Colton, California, as a child. Educated in the Colton schools, he moved to San Diego in 1939. He was married to Martha Sieglar in 1940. During World War II, he was a draftsman and worked on subassemblies of the B-24 bomber at Consolidated Aircraft. After the war, he studied architecture and began his career with architect, Sam Hamill. He received his architecture license in 1951 and opened his own office in La Mesa, California. Over the years he designed schools, hospitals and churches, many of which are still in service to their communities. In 1958, he was elected president of the San Diego chapter of AIA. In his later years, he worked for Trepte Construction Company, where he continued to practice and design until two months ago. Projects with Trepte included work on significant buildings at North Island Naval Air Station, as well as work on Trepte's portfolio of real estate projects. He was the longest practicing architect in San Diego and was honored with the title of Architect Emeritus this year by the San Diego chapter of AIA. He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Martha. In April, Martha and Lee celebrated their 70th anniversary with four generations of their family surrounding them. Their love and commitment to one another, as well as to their family and friends, will continue to be an inspiration to all who knew them. In addition, Lee is survived by his daughters, Patricia (Leland) Barrett and Dail (Richard) Hartnack and his beloved grandchildren, Kathleen (David), Eric (Corey), and Brian (Larna). He also leaves behind five great-grandchildren, Will, Jack, Daley, Holly and Henry, along with his brothers, Raymond Holt and Jack Eggers. In addition to his architecture practice, Lee had a life long interest in science and aviation. He was a beloved husband, grandfather, father-in-law and most of all, Dad.

On behalf of The American Institute of Architects here in San Diego, our deepest condolences go out to Martha, Lee's family and friends. We simply adored him here and will always, always remember, as we honored him this year as the eldest AIA member in San Diego, his response when asked in front of his fellow architects what was his secret to 70 years of marriage, his response was, "Yes, dear." We miss you, Lee.

Martha - My wife, Karen, and I were deeply saddened to hear of Lee's passing earlier this month. If you'll remember I worked with Lee on a North Island project for Trepte back in 1980. Lee and I became good friends through this relationship and that resulted in several nice get-togheter's with you and Lee during the early 80's. While we lost contact with you after that Karen and I have reflected on our times with you on many occasions and remember what a tremendous relationship the two of you had. In this regard you have been a wonderful inspiration to us in our marraige of 27 years. God bless you Martha and peace be with your beloved Lee.

Martha, Dail, and Patti, So sorry to hear the news. My heart aches for you all. He was like a second grandfather to me; always there to comfort and encourage me when I was down, and celebrate with me during the ups. I've never known two people so in love and devoted to each other for so many years. What an inspiration! Much love, Amy Coulter (Martha's old hairstylist)

Jim and I were so saddened to read this morning of Lee's passing. He was a wonderful person and great friend to Mom and Pop. We will always value his friendship to them and his warmth to both of us. We hope Martha is doing okay and that you all will get through this knowing what a great life he had and how much he gave to the world. He was a great guy and will be missed greatly.
