RICHARD BARRETT Obituary

BARRETT Jr., RICHARD "RICK" C. Richard "Rick" C. Barrett Jr. passed away peacefully after a very long illness on December 6, 2010. He was born in Los Angeles to Barbara and Richard Barrett on December 4, 1939. Rick attended El Rodeo School, spent two years at Beverly Hills High School and graduated from the Chadwick School. After high school, he enlisted in the Coast Guard and served 6 months on active duty followed by 7 1/2 years in the reserves. In 1958, Rick enrolled in the school of his childhood dreams, The University of Southern California. While at USC, he joined the Tau Epsilon Phi fraternity making life long friends that gave him great joy throughout his entire life. Rick's license plate confirmed he was a true "SC Nut." Following graduation from USC in 1962 he married Marilee Singer and started his business career as a stock broker in Palm Springs. While there they had three daughters and again made more friends for life. That was Rick's way. He made many friends all through his life and stayed in touch with them for the rest of his years. In 1963, while in Palm Springs, Rick founded the Trojan Club of the Desert. He moved to San Diego with his family in 1974. After settling in San Diego and continuing his career as a stock broker, Rick co-founded the Trojan Club of San Diego. He began serving on the board of Congregation Beth Israel and in 1984 became President, serving two years. He was a Master Mason. Rick served on the Board of The Crew Classic, served two years as President and with Jane Fetter started what has become the Annual Crew Classic Brunch by the Bay. In 1984, he married Donna Landon who has two children Laura and Bill. Rick went on to serve on the Board of The Reuben H. Fleet Science Center and served on the Holiday Bowl Committee eventually becoming a life member. In 2002, Rick and Sue Raffee became partners and on September 28, 2008 they were married. She has two daughters, Kim and Kay. Five days before they were to be married, Rick was diagnosed with esophageal cancer and thus began his long illness. Rick is survived by his wife, Sue, mother, Barbara Barrett, sister, Virginia Clements, daughters Laurie Biros (Mike), Julie Parker (Jim), and Amanda Brooks (Aaron), four step-child-ren and spouses, four grandchildren and seven step-grand-children. Rick's smile will live on forever. Services have been held, but there will be a Celebration of Rick's Life on Tuesday, December 14th, at the Catamaran Hotel from 4:00 to 7:30 PM. The family is grateful to all the Doctors at Scripps Clinic and Green Hospital that cared so diligently for Rick and to the wonderful caregivers and Hospice teams that helped him to the very end of his life. Contributions may be made to the Sanford/Burnham Medical Research Institute, USC, Alpha Project for the Homeless, The San Diego Crew Classic or the charity of your choice.

I first met Rick about 1977 in Palm Springs. He knew my soon-to-be girlfriend and helped us arrange a romantic rendezvous in Coronado. I later moved to San Diego and stayed in touch with Rick occasionally as he had moved here as well. He always answered my financial questions for free and gave great advice. I know he'll be missed greatly by his family and many others.

Rick was a super guy with a friendly smile and always willing to help anyone. I knew him through the Holiday Bowl Committee, but felt like had known him always. He genuinely cared about his friends, and he had loads of them. He will be greatly missed by all of us.
My very best to Sue and his entire family.

Dear Sue,

I just read this and was truly saddened. Rick had a spectacular life and for that all should be thankful.

My very best to you and your family in dealing with his loss.

With warm thoughts and prayers,
JoEllen

I first met Rick when I came to San Diego in 1976 from Los Angeles. He helped me get involved in the Trojan Club and as a result I met many new friends and business associates. More importantly I certainly was a better person for knowing him.
