ROBERT HAMANN Obituary

HAMANN, ROBERT DALE Robert Dale Hamann was born in Winnepeg, Canada on December 9, 1923, and went home to be with the Lord on February 11, 2010. He moved with his family to San Diego in 1935 and graduated from Grossmont High School in 1941. He served in World War II as a radioman in the Navy, and his unit was decorated for breaking the Japanese code. He married Dorothy Peterson on March 21, 1948 and to this union were born four sons: Jeffrey C., Gregg R., Curtis P. and Barry C. He received a BS degree in Civil Engineering from San Diego State University in 1952. After working on Mission Bay High School and other construction projects for his father, he formed his own company in 1954. He built many homes and industrial buildings around the county. By 2002 his diverse business entities took the name Hamann Companies. He was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church and supported many Christian ministries and missionaries, including the San Diego Rescue Mission, Christian Community Theater, Set Free San Diego, COAD, the YMCA, Focus on the Family and others. Bob's home was always open to missionaries and students, including Worku Fente whom he visited in Ethiopia, sponsored for a visa and welcomed into his home as part of the family. He also had a heart to serve the Honduran people. Over the course of 20 years, he helped build a hospital, a nurses' dormitory, escorted 10 high school work teams, shipped numerous containers of medical and school supplies and took many medical teams to the community of Siguatepeque, Honduras. Bob enjoyed fishing, scuba diving, snorkeling and vacationing on and around the ocean. He especially enjoyed introducing friends and family to the wonders of the sea from his catamaran, the Gloriamaris. He was a private pilot for 25 years and flew his Cherokee Lance all over Baja California and the western U.S. In 1972-1973, he took a sabbatical from work and traveled with his family all the way around the world over the course of nine months. He is survived by his wife, four sons, fifteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be held at Covenant Presbyterian Church, 2930 Howard Avenue, San Diego, on March 13, 2010, at 5:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, Memorial contributions may be made to Covenant Presbyterian Church, 2930 Howard Avenue, San Diego, CA 92104, for the "R.D. Hamann Sanctuary Renovation Fund".

Dear Hamann Family, Bob was like the man who walked along the seashore tossing stranded starfish back in the ocean thus saving their lives. My knowledge of him and your wonderful family comes by way of Worku Fente, the Ethiopian student he sponsored and welcomed into your family. Worku once showed me the beautiful seashell collection he gathered from his world travels that was showcased at your home. From his support of missionaries and people like Worku, and his countless good works at home, Bob has saved many starfish. God bless and comfort you all and welcome him home. Dear Dottie and family:
Our love and prayers are with you. Bob was truly an instrument used by God. He was a blessing to COAD for many years; flying our patients, doctors and the much needed medical equipment to and from our Clinics in Mexico and serving on our board. We never could have done all the surgeries without his help. He will be in our hearts forever for his generosity, friendship and love.
May God bless you and give you peace.

To Dot, Jeffery, Gregg, Curtis, Barry and the rest of Bob’s loving family.

Many years have passed, many memories have accumulated. While all are important to recall, the childhood ones were the everlasting ones where we learned to grow into manhood, where we created our own families and where we went on to help others with their lives. Bob made a significant mark on this earth. While Bob’s physical presence will no longer be among us, his highly spiritual presence will be felt by all for a very long time. The fertile seed he sowed with his tremendously strong mind in the service of his country, in the impact of his construction business and in his unceasing compassion for those who needed him most, will continue to bear fruit in the many whose lives he touched. We shall miss him sorely but we will never forget him in our hearts.
Our heartfelt thoughts are now with you all.
