WARD MALKIN Obituary

MALKIN, WARD ROBERT A 26-year resident of Tierrasanta, Ward Robert Malkin was born May 20, 1926, to Mary Brugge Malkin and William Ward Malkin in East Norwalk, CT, and graduated from Norwalk High School in 1944. He was active in the Boy Scouts and achieved scouting's highest honor of Eagle Scout. He joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1944 and was stationed at Camp Maui, Hawaii, until the war's end when he was honorably discharged. Ward graduated from the University of Connecticut where he met and married Elsie Milardo and received his bachelor's degree. Ward and Elsie had two children, Barry and Valerie. A summer's cross-country trip in his early college years included a tour of California with which he fell in love and determined to make his home. That dream came true in 1955. He worked for several years at Firestone Tire in Pasadena and later joined Transamerica Occidental Life from which he retired in 1981 after 25 years of service. While at Transamerica, he met and married his wife, Kathleen, on February 2, 1974. They enjoyed a long and happy marriage and traveled extensively across the U.S., Canada and Europe until his health began a steady decline in 1998. Ward was a longtime member of the 4th Marine Division Association's Chapter 7, a volunteer for the American Cancer Society and later he served several years as a volunteer at Sharp Memorial Hospital where he died on November 6, 2010. Ward is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, Kathleen, son Barry Malkin of Anaheim Hills, daughter Valerie (Mrs. Arthur) Hidalgo of Newport Beach, son Scott (Penny) Finders of El Segundo, brother Warren (Ruth) Malkin of Brookfield, CT, and four grandsons, Jason and Alan Malkin of Anaheim Hills and Jack and Matthew Finders of El Segundo, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Lois Greenwood. He was a Marine. He was a gentleman. He was loved. Services will be held at First United Methodist Church on Friday, November 12th, at 1:00 p.m. Memorials may be directed to First United Methodist Church, 2111 Camino del Rio South, San Diego, CA 92108.
