Andrew "Andy" Stone
SPRINGFIELD - Andrew "Andy" Stone, 54, of Springfield, Ill., died at 10:22 p.m. on Thursday, January 24, 2013, at St. John's Mercy Hospital in St. Louis, Mo.
He was born June 1, 1958, in Springfield, Ill., the son of Richard and Carolyn (Burrus) Stone. He was preceded in death by his father.
Andy is survived by his wife, Roseanne "Roe" (Mussatt); his son, Andrew "Drew" Richard Stone II (wife, Katherine "Katie" Trauthwein) of Columbia, Md.; his mother, Carolyn (Burrus) Stone of Springfield, Ill.; two sisters, Amy Stone (husband, Peter Frisina, sons, Cole and Tate Stone-Frisina) of Atlanta, Ga., and Anna Stone of Springfield, Ill.; brother-in-law, Tom Mussatt (wife, Susan, daughter, Courtney and son, Chris); in addition to many cousins, aunts, and uncles.
After growing up on the family farm, Andy graduated from Pleasant Plains High School in 1976, then from the University of Illinois in 1980 with a bachelor's degree in Agricultural Economics and Finance. He married Roe on June 13, 1981, at St. James Church in Riverton, Ill. He joined the family businesses, Stone Seed Farms and Company, upon graduating, and assumed responsibility for running the seed business a short three years later upon the death of his father. During his time as President of Stone Seed Company, Andy greatly expanded the business. In 1996, he co-founded The CORE Group, Inc., a group of geographically diverse independent seed companies. In 2005 Stone Seed Company joined Monsanto, through its American Seeds Incorporated subsidiary. After joining Monsanto, Andy served first as President of the Stone Seed Group, and most recently was working for Monsanto in St. Louis in their Integrated Farming Systems business. Andy also remained active with the Stone family farm throughout his life.
Actively involved in the community, Andy was a current board member of Warren-Boynton State Bank and a former member of the Independent Professional Seedmen's Association, Illinois Foundation Seeds, Inc., and Lincoln Land Community College Foundation. He was also a member of the Association of Agricultural Production Executives (AAPEX.) He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Springfield.
Besides his busy professional life, Andy enjoyed many hobbies including a love of target shooting and bird hunting with his son, Drew. He also enjoyed escaping to Jekyll Island, Ga., as often as possible with his beloved Roe.
Visitation will be Monday, January 28, 2013, at Boardman-Smith Funeral Home in Springfield, Ill., from 4 to 8 p.m. An additional visitation will begin at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, January 29, 2013, at Farmingdale Presbyterian Church (7971 Farmington Cemetery Road, Pleasant Plains, IL 62677). The funeral service will begin at 11 a.m. at the church with burial immediately following at Farmington Cemetery in Pleasant Plains, Ill.
