SPRINGFIELD, IL - Charles H. "Colonel" Young, Jr. , 82, died at 6:39 a.m., Friday, March 7, 2014, at St. John's Hospital. He was born August 7, 1931, in Shelbyville, Ill., to Charles and Clara Varnell Young. He married Patricia Rock on February 14, 1953. His parents; a sister, Barbara Adams; a brother-in-law, Robert McCauley; and nephew, David McCauley, preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Patricia Young; his children, Charles (Becky) Young, Gary (Debi) Young, Geri Marie (Randy) Cook, Dennis (Kristina) Young, Paul (Faye) Young, and Anne (Lonnie) Henry; 17 grandchildren, Joseph (Lianne), LeeAnn, Marybeth, Matt and Krissy Young, Jessica (Chad) Hughes, Tara (Ron) Mudra, Trista, Alyssa and Evan Cook, Mandy (Cliff) Reed, Amber and Dani Young, Natasha, Cameron, Austin and Grace Henry; five great-grandchildren, Maisie, Madi, Jett and Cash Reed and Ron Mudra IV; one sister, Yvonne McCauley, of Springfield; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was a retired member of Carpenters Union Local #16. Charles was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps serving during the Korean War (1952-1954).

He attended St. Cabrini Church. Charles was a member of Bergen Park Men's Club for over 40 years, the Sangamon Valley RC Flyers and the AMA (Academy of Model Aeronautics). He coached all his kids in Little League and softball leagues for many years.

Visitation: 9 a.m.–10:30 a.m., Wednesday, March 12, 2014, at St. Cabrini Church.

Funeral Service: 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, March 12, 2014, at St. Cabrini Church with Rev Richard Chiola officiating. Burial will be in Camp Butler National Cemetery where military honors will be conducted by the United States Marine Corp.

Memorial contributions may be made to Lupus Society or St. Cabrini Church.
