David H. Phipps

SPRINGFIELD, IL - David H. Phipps, 87, formerly of St. Charles, Ill., died Sunday, Dec. 8, 2013, at Lewis Memorial Christian Village in Springfield.

David was born March 17, 1926, in Stevens Point, Wis., the son of Dr. Cornelius Phipps and Grace Hart Phipps. He married Alice Blaufuss on Feb. 5, 1955.

He is survived by his wife, Alice; daughter, Peggy Goetsch (husband, Warren) of Williamsville; son, D. Scott Phipps (wife, Susan) of Moscow, Russia; and five grandchildren: Heather Goetsch of Brooklyn, N.Y., Andrew Goetsch of Charleston, Ill., Matthew Goetsch of DeKalb, Ill., Michael Phipps of Palatine, Ill., and Ryan Phipps of Columbia , Mo.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Mary Jane Phipps and Elizabeth Ullrich; one brother, C. Mark Phipps; and one grandson, Colin Phipps.

David was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in Europe during WWII, and later during the Korean conflict. He graduated from Lincoln High School in Manitowoc, Wis., and attended the University of Missouri. He retired from Chicago Staple in 1996.

David loved history, woodworking, taking the backroads, being with his family, and sailing. He was actively involved in scouting, including the Sea Explorers. His generous spirit, storytelling, quick wit, and hearty laugh will be greatly missed. He was loved by everyone who knew him.

Cremation was accorded by Lincoln Land Cremation Society.

Visitation: The family will host a memorial gathering from 2-4 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 22, 2013, at St. John United Church of Christ, 7th and Maple Streets, Lincoln, Ill. A private family service will follow.

Memorials may be made to Wounded Warriors Partnership or the donor's choice.
