SPRINGFIELD - Francis P. Sponsky, 95, of Springfield, passed away on Wednesday, July 24, 2013, at his residence.
Francis was born on March 14, 1918, in Girard, the son of Frank and Rose Ketchmark Sponsky. He married Noretta "Lorene" Bickhaus on March 16, 1941; she preceded him in death January 2008.
He was a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army during WWII. He received a Bronze Star Medal, Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Service Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with double Bronze Star Attachment, WWII Victory Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge and Honorable Service Lapel Button WWII.
He was head of security for Sangamo Electric where he later retired. He was a member of Third Presbyterian Church, Masonic Lodge No.4, A.F.&A.M., Consistory, Ansar Shrine, Sangamo Retirees Club, Polka Club of Riverton, and a past member of the Inter-Veterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County. Francis was an avid fly fisherman who handmade his own flys and rods from blanks.
He is survived by two sons, Gregg Sponsky, of Chicago, and Michael Sponsky of Texas; one brother, George Sponsky of California; one sister, Loretta, of Missouri, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 31, 2013, with a Masonic Service at 6:30 p.m. at Ellinger-Kunz & Park Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on Thursday, August 1, 2013, at the funeral home with Pastor Brent Mitchell officiating. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery where the Inter-Veterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County will conduct honors.
Memorial contributions may be made to Third Presbyterian Church.
