Frederick Joseph Zarf, Sr.
SPRINGFIELD - Frederick Joseph Zarf, Sr., 92, of Springfield, died at 8:53 p.m. on Monday, March 21, 2013, at Memorial Medical Center.
Frederick was born February 2, 1921, in Koflach, Austria, the son of Frederick and Maria Wittreich Zarf. He immigrated to the United States via Ellis Island when he was seven years old. Fred married Wanda Maxine Jackson on April 9, 1949, in Springfield.
Frederick proudly served his country in the United States Army during WWII and the Korean Conflict. He worked as a carpenter for George S. Grimmett and Company for almost 40 years and was a 65 year member of Carpenter's Local #16.
Fred enjoyed fishing, hunting and reading and had a special passion for collecting tools and guns. He was an avid Cubs fan and enjoyed watching their games with Wanda.
Fred took great pride in the home he built for his family and lovingly spent countless hours planting and nurturing a variety of trees. One of his favorite pastimes was sitting on the patio, enjoying his beautiful backyard and viewing the abundant wildlife living there.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, and three brothers.
Fred is survived by his wife, Wanda Zarf of Springfield; children: Pamela (husband, Todd) Bischoff of Frederick, CO, Frederick (wife, Karen) Zarf, Jr., of Wentzville, MO, and Becky (husband, Kendall) Lamkey of Ames, IA; seven grandchildren: Todd Jr., Trent, Anna, Frederick, Collin, Nicholas, and Jacob; three great-grandchildren; one sister, Augusta Jones of Springfield; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation: Family will receive friends from 4:00-6:00 p.m., Tuesday, March 26, 2013, at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield.
Funeral Ceremony: 11:30 a.m., Wednesday, March 27, 2013, at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, with Rev. Vaughn Beeman officiating.
Private family burial will be at Camp Butler National Cemetery.
