OTTUMWA, IA - Georgia Joette Gum, 31, formerly of Bushnell, Ill., and Petersburg, Ill., passed away Aug. 15, 2013, in Ottumwa.
Georgia was born June 27, 1982, in Springfield, Ill., to Delilah Gum.
Having grown up in Bushnell, she graduated from PORTA High School in Petersburg. She served in the U.S. Navy from 2005 to 2009 with the Dusty Dogs in Jacksonville, Fla. She excelled and took great pride in her military service. She was honorably discharged in 2009 as an E5.
Georgia received her bachelor's degree from Western Illinois University and graduated summa cum laude. She was currently working on her master's degree in school counseling at Liberty University.
Georgia moved to Ottumwa in September of 2012 and worked as a transport officer for SIACC.
Georgia regularly attended Pennsylvania Avenue Free Methodist Church in Ottumwa. She loved experiencing the word of God. She enjoyed mountain biking, quilting and riding roller coasters. She loved cats, especially Sassy, Raylan, Gizmo and Stubbs.
Georgia is survived by her mother, Delilah Gum of Greenview, Ill.; a sister, Joyce (Nick) Taylor of Ottumwa; a nephew and four nieces who were her pride and joy, Nicholas, Cheson, McKayla, Airianna and Kylee Taylor all of Ottumwa; her grandmother, Georgia (Louie) Dawson of Petersburg; several aunts, uncles and cousins; stepfather, John Williams III of Mt. Pleasant; and her boyfriend, Matt Murphy of Packwood, Iowa.
Georgia was preceded in death by her grandparents, Joyce and Raymond Boden.
Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2013, at Pennsylvania Avenue Free Methodist Church with Rev. Tim Ward officiating. Graveside services and burial will follow at 2:00 p.m. at Keokuk National Cemetery in Keokuk, Iowa with military honors.
Visitation begins at 11:00 a.m., Monday, Aug. 19, at Reece Funeral Home in Ottumwa with family present from 6-8 p.m.
