Helen C. Blalock

SPRINGFIELD, IL - Helen C. Blalock, 96, died at 4:55 a.m., Saturday, May 10, 2014, at St. Joseph's Home. She was born June 17, 1917, in Springfield the daughter of William F. and Marie Carrico Castor.

She married Howard R. "Bill" Blalock on Nov. 24, 1943, and he preceded her in death on Aug. 7, 2001. She was also preceded in death by her parents and a brother, William E. Castor, Sr.

Surviving are a daughter, Janet B. (Pat) Metz of Springfield; a son, Karl E. (Georgia) Blalock of Riverwoods, Ill.; five grandchildren, Christopher (Lori) Metz and Elizabeth Metz of Ft. Collins, Colo., Joseph Metz, Michael Metz and Rebecca (Brad) Leonard, all of Springfield; four great-grandchildren, Cassidy Elizabeth, J.P., Dylan Blalock and Julia Helen; and a nephew, William E. Castor, Jr.

She attended Springfield High School and Springfield Junior College. She was an accomplished pianist and a devoted mother and grandmother. She loved the outdoors and her many flowers. She was a dedicated business woman and thrived as a legal secretary and bookkeeper. She worked as a cashier for Equitable Life of Iowa Insurance Company for seven years prior to joining her husband at Blalock's 5¢ to $1 Store and was also a legal secretary for her husband who was an attorney.

She was a lifelong resident of Springfield and a member of Blessed Sacrament Church, where she was a member of the Altar and Rosary Society. She was a past President and lifetime member of St. John's Hospital Guild (now St. John's Samaritans), past President and member of the Capital City Chapter of the American Business Women's Assoc., member of St. Louise de Marillac Guild, member of the St. Joseph's Coterie, member of the Women's Club of Springfield and volunteer at St. John's Hospital for many years.

Visitation: 4-7 p.m., Wednesday, May 14, 2014, at Staab Funeral Home. Prayer service at 4 p.m. with Deacon Tom Burns.

Funeral Mass: 10 a.m., Thursday, May 15, 2014, at Blessed Sacrament Church with Reverend Jeff Grant officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery.

The family requests memorial contributions be made to Blessed Sacrament Church or St. John's Samaritans.
