QUINCY, IL - Jesse B. Dyer, 88, died Friday, Jan. 3, 2014, at 8:50 a.m. at his home in Quincy.

Jesse was born Jan. 11, 1925, in Labelle, Mo., the son of Jesse B. and Catherine Elizabeth Prather Dyer. He married Dora Ruth Gard on Oct. 9, 1949, in the home of Edward and Jeanette Gower in Quincy, Ill. She survives.

He was a 1943 graduate of LaBelle High School. Jesse served his country in the U.S. Army from 1943-1947, serving in the 14th Armored Division in the European Theater. He attended Gem City Business College and graduated in 1948. While attending college, he met his future wife, Dora Ruth Gard. Jesse enjoyed a 30-year career with the U.S. Postal Service, retiring as Bulk Mail Technician.

Jesse was a longtime member of Grace United Methodist Church. He believed in God and gained strength, forgiveness and patience through Him. Jesse was well-known for his good nature and his love and devotion for his family. He instilled his belief of family, respect and hard work in all members of his family.

Jesse also enjoyed farming his small farm. He enjoyed collecting paper weights and postcards, and was member of the Paper Weight Collector Association. Jesse was also an avid button collector. He was a member of the Mississippi Valley Button Club, Illinois State Button Society and National Button Society.

Survivors in addition to his wife, Dora Ruth, include their five children: Mary Catherine Dyer of Quincy, Jane Elizabeth Dyer of Springfield, Ill., James Benjamin (Kay) Dyer of Quincy, Eugene Richard (Kristin) Dyer of Marion, Ohio, and Dianna Lynn Dyer of Quincy; six grandchildren: Robyn (Randy Rettinghaus) Dougherty, Keith Eugene (Michelle) Dyer, Krystal Faith Dyer, Stephanie Marie Dyer, Mary Elizabeth Dyer, and Jessica Jane (Bradley) Whiston; nine great-grandchildren: Pyrrhus James Nelson, Jesse Benjamin Nelson, Ryeder Rettinghaus, Meadow Olivia Whiston, Willow Sophia Whiston, Magnolia Mae Whiston, Madison Elizabeth Dyer, Adeline Maylee Dyer, and Bryden Keith Groves; and many loving nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Jesse was preceded in death by his parents.

Services: 2 p.m., Monday, Jan. 6, 2014, at Hansen-Spear Funeral Home, Pastor John Frank officiating. Burial will be at Greenmount Cemetery.

Visitation: 2-5 p.m., Sunday, January 5, 2014, at Hansen-Spear Funeral Home.
