Marvin Wendel "Red" Sims
WAVERLY - Marvin Wendel "Red" Sims, 87, of Waverly, Ill., died Monday morning, February 18, 2013, at Sunrise Manor in Virden, Ill.
He was born January 26, 1926, in Modesto, Ill., son of the late Howard and Clarice Sims.
He married Josephine Marie Day on June 28, 1952, in Springfield, Ill., and she survives.
Also surviving is one daughter, Mary Sims of St. Peters, Mo.; one son, Edward Sims and wife Connie of Springfield, Ill.; a son-in-law, John Mitchell of Waverly, Ill.; three grandchildren, Stevi Mitchell of Waverly, Ill., Andrew Sims of Troy, Ill., and Elizabeth Sims of Springfield, Ill.; one sister, Alice Zonfrilli of Rantoul, Ill.; a sister-in-law, Darlene Sims of St. Charles, Ill.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Barbara Mitchell; a son, Richard Sims, in infancy; a brother, Lowell Sims; and a sister, Velma Mansfield.
Mr. Sims was a lifelong farmer farming in the Waverly and Modesto, Ill., area and was a loving son, husband, father and grandfather. He loved woodworking and making gifts for family and friends. He also loved going to the local café or the grain elevator where friends gathered for coffee. He was a member of the Farm Bureau.
As a young man, Marvin enjoyed riding motorcycles and was especially fond of his 1949 Harley, still in running condition.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, February 23, 2013, at the Neece-Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Waverly, Ill. Burial will be in Pulliam Cemetery near Modesto, Ill. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services Saturday at the funeral home.
