Mary Beth Thompson

CHICAGO - Mary Beth Thompson, 69, passed away Sunday, Dec. 8, 2013, at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago. She was a long-time resident of Chicago.

She was preceded in death in 2012 by her husband, Ernest Hovland.

She is survived by her sister, Norma (Dave) Lauder of Oak Brook; her niece and nephew, Katie and Joe Lauder, also of Oak Brook; and her beloved Chihuahua, Bella.

Mary Beth was born in Springfield, Ill., on Feb. 3, 1944, and grew up in Cantrall, Ill. She was the daughter of the late Joseph and Elizabeth (Maher) Thompson.

Mary Beth was a graduate of Athens Community High School and co-valedictorian of the Class of 1962. She subsequently graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She retired from Ameritech Corporation after more than 25 years of service where she held a number of management positions in accounting and information systems. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Church in Chicago.

Mary Beth loved to travel and was an avid sports fan. She celebrated the victories and mourned the losses of all of her favorite teams -- the Fighting Illini, and the Chicago Cubs, Bears and Bulls.

A memorial mass will be held Jan. 11, 2014, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Church, 1107 N. Orleans St., Chicago, IL 60610.

Her ashes will be committed following a prayer service at 11:00 a.m. on Jan. 25, 2014 in the Chapel at Calvary Cemetery in Springfield, Ill.

The family is being served by Ewald-Barlock Funeral Home in Chicago.
