SPRINGFIELD, IL - Richard Yates Reid, 83, went to see our Lord at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2013, at his home, surrounded by love from his wife and their nine children.

"Dick" was born Dec. 18, 1929, in Springfield, Ill. He was one of five children born to John and Elizabeth Wood Reid. He married Doris "Dodie" Shaughnessy on Oct. 6, 1951, at St. Joseph's Church. They remained at each other's side for 62 wonderful years. He and Dodie had nine children and raising them was their greatest joy. Instilling faith in them was their greatest gift.

Dick graduated from Cathedral Boys High School in 1948 and was a graduate of Springfield Junior College in 1950. He was Supervisor of Members' Benefits for the State of Illinois, Teacher's Retirement System, for 36 years.

Dick also loved sports. He lettered in three sports all four years while in high school and was voted captain of his basketball team and co-captain of his football team his senior year. He went on to coach youth basketball and baseball teams for many years and started the Intramural Basketball Program at St. Joseph's School. Whether playing sports or watching his children and grandchildren participate in sports, his competitive spirit was ever so present and his pride in his family apparent.

In 2006, he was inducted into the Springfield Sports Hall of Fame with his brothers, Joe, Dave, and Jack. He was a member of two basketball teams from Cathedral Boys High School to advance to the State Basketball Tournament. In his retirement years, Dick enjoyed playing golf with his brothers, brothers-in-law, and friends. He was an official member of the "Thursday Guys Lunch Club." He and Dodie attended daily mass, exercised at the Fit Club, played Bridge in several card groups, and were active in the Christ the King Parish Over 50 Club. Dick also served as a Samaritan at St. John's Hospital for 20 years and was a member of Christ the King Parish.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers: Jack, Joe, and Dave; and one grandson, Nicholas Lowell Taylor.

He is survived by his wife, Dodie; five sons, Dick (wife, Michelle) of Naperville, Bill (wife, Karen) and Chris (wife, Becky), both of Springfield, Dan of New York, and Doug of Los Angeles; four daughters: Barb (husband, Dave) Farris of Auburn, Mary Lynn (special friend, Bill Sheehan) Reid, Kathy (husband, John) Sestak and Carol (husband, Lance) Taylor, all of Springfield; twenty-two grandchildren: Janelle (husband, Greg) Farris Hutti, Angela (husband, Brian) Farris Schoby, Megan and Michelle Farris, Kristin, Kane, Shelby and Dylan Reid, Blake Kerz, Taylor, Jenna, MacKenzie and Jake Reid, Shaughnessy (wife, Tara) Reid, Shay and Nolan Reid, Connor, Jordan, Jessie and Clint Sestak, and Ryleigh, Cole and Reid Taylor; three great-grandchildren, Max and Kacie Schoby and Ella Hutti; one sister, Mona (husband, Robert) Davis of Auburn; and many nieces and nephews.
