SPRINGFIELD - Stuart O. Cappellin, 74, of Springfield, died at 11:25 a.m. on Thursday, September 5, 2013, at Memorial Medical Center.
Stuart was born September 15, 1938, in Springfield, the son of Robert and Edna Mae Adloff Cappellin. He married Mary Elizabeth Cleary on February 14, 1960, in Springfield.
Stuart was a 1956 graduate of Springfield High School and later attended Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, where he was a member of Sigma Pi fraternity. He proudly served his country in the United States Army and Reserves. He was a member of the Plumbers and Steamfitters Local 137 for 50 years and a teacher at the Union Hall. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, where he sang in the choir. He was a Boy Scout troop leader and was awarded the Order of the Arrow, Silver Beaver and Bronze Big Horn honors. Stuart also served on the Boy Scout Council for many years and served on numerous committees. He was the founder and leader of Explorer Post 11 and influenced the lives of many young people. Stuart was a 50-year member of Island Bay Yacht Club where he served as Commodore and raced Escow sailboats. He was the CEO of Punzak Air Conditioning and Sales Company.
He was married to his loving wife, Beth, for 53 years. He enjoyed traveling, reading, going to movies, and especially spending time with his beloved grandchildren. Stuart will be greatly missed by his many friends and family.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Charles Cappellin.
He is survived by his wife, Beth Cappellin of Springfield; two daughters, Kathy (husband, Rick) Sanders and Linda Campas, all of Springfield; four grandchildren, Erik (wife, Jessica) Sanders, Alison Sanders, Jack and Cameron Campas; one great-grandson, Jacob; one brother, Tom (wife, Jana) Cappellin of Springfield.
Visitation: Family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. on Tuesday, September 10, 2013, at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield.
Funeral Ceremony: 10 a.m. on Wednesday, September 11, 2013, at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, with Rev. Dr. Clifford Hayes officiating. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park.
