Vern E. Halverson

SPRINGFIELD- Vern E. Halverson passed away on Wednesday, January 16, 2013 at 5:20 a.m. at St. John's Hospice.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Elmer and Maude Sprague Halverson; his brothers, Earl and Arthur; and his sisters, infant Zelda, Ethel Patterson, and Edna Beermann.

Vern is survived by his wife of 61 years, Mary Brehme Halverson. He is also survived by his five children, Sue (Pat) Landgrebe, Terry (Terry) Moody, Jill (Mike) Meseke, and sons Steve (Sharon) Halverson and Scott Halverson; grandchildren, Kyle (Kayla) Zellers, Chelley (Ben) Macon, Jeremy and Lindsey Landgrebe, Cade, Caitlyn and Cara Moody, Clayton and Coleton Meseke, and Kramer and Leah Halverson; great-grandchildren, Will, Jack and Kinsley Zellers, and Landon Macon; one brother, Dale (Marge) Halverson; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was born on April 10, 1929 at home in Hawkeye, Iowa, and was destined to become an Iowa Hawkeye fan. He grew up in West Union, Iowa and in 1952 graduated from the University of Iowa with a degree in Civil Engineering. He then built roads and bridges for Fayette County Iowa Highway Dept., Coffeen Construction, LaCrosse Dredging, Mass Construction, S.J. Groves Construction and in 1978 started his own construction company, Halverson Construction Co., Inc. at age 49, along with his wife Mary. He was a Past- Vice President of Associated General Contractors of Illinois, a longtime member of Springfield Ski and Boat Club, and Elks Lodge #158.

Vern loved life – his family and construction. No one enjoyed a good laugh more than he, no one valued the pleasures and rewards of friendship more than he. His favorite times would always be spent with his family, his children whom he guided well and his grandchildren and great-grandchildren whom he adored and whose lives he enriched. He will be best remembered for his sense of humor and his wonderful smile.

He was a long time member of Douglas Avenue United Methodist Church.

Visitation: Family will receive friends from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 20, 2013 at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield.

Funeral Ceremony: 10:00 a.m. on Monday, January 21, 2013 at Douglas Avenue United Methodist Church, 501 S. Douglas Ave., Springfield, with Pastor Julia Melgreen officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery.
