Virginia Burnett McNeely

FRANKLIN, IL - Virginia Burnett McNeely, 93, passed away Thursday, Feb. 20, 2014, at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield. She was born June 13, 1920, in Morgan County, the daughter of Frank L. and Dorothy Austin Burnett. She married Wayne "Sonny" McNeely on Nov. 28, 1942, in Springfield, and he preceded her in death Oct. 25, 1993.

Virginia is survived by her daughter, Susan (Larry) Smith, of Franklin; two grandsons, Douglass Smith (wife, Christine) of Riverview, Fla., and Kevin Smith, of New Berlin (friend, Rebecca Lipscomb, of Springfield); great-granddaughter, Addison Smith of Riverview, Fla.; brother, Richard Seymour (wife, Evelyn), of Jacksonville; and sister-in-law, Helen J. Burnett, of Waverly; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Pauline Ann McNeely; her father, Frank L. Burnett; her mother, Dorothy A. Seymour; two sisters, Louise Green and Mary Joan Strawkas; and two brothers, Frank E. Burnett and Warren Seymour. Three stepsisters, Monsolette McCormick, Leota Ashby, and Enola Tranbarger also preceded her.

She was a member of Franklin United Methodist Church and an active volunteer for Bread of Love. Virginia was a 1937 graduate of Franklin High School, attended Western Illinois University, and worked as a legal secretary for Barber and Barber in Springfield. She later served as a civilian employee at the U.S. Army Air Force Depot in Springfield during World War II. After returning to the family farm where she was raised, she was a homemaker, Scout Leader, 4-H Leader, member of Home Extension, served on the Morgan County HIA Board, and was an avid St. Louis Cardinal fan.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 24, 2014, at the Franklin United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Franklin Cemetery.

The family will meet with friends on Sunday from 2-4 p.m. at the Williamson Funeral Home in Jacksonville.
