William A. "Bill" Goss, Jr.
SPRINGFIELD - William A. Goss, Jr., 91, of Springfield died at 1:19 p.m., Thursday, June 13, 2013, at Concordia Village. He was born May 3, 1922, in Medora, Ind., to William A. and Helen McMillan Goss. He married Anna Mae Harmon July 23, 1945, and she preceded him in death December 24, 2010. Also preceding him in death were his parents and a sister, Eileen Rusby.
Bill graduated from Springfield High School and was attending Washington University in St. Louis when he enlisted in the United States Coast Guard in 1942. He served on a troop transport ship that crossed the Atlantic 26 times. Mr. Goss was a past president of Abraham Lincoln High 12 Club; charter member of the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C., and the National WWII D-day Museum in New Orleans. Bill was a member of the Springfield Art Association, Illinois State Museum Society, life member of the Sangamo Club and member and past president of Nighthawks Dance Club. He retired as General Manager at Pendleton Toyota.
Surviving are his daughter, Julie Ann (Rob) Kunz Hampleman of Springfield; two grandchildren, Kara (Steve) Gray and Scott Kunz; four great-grandchildren, Cassie and Claire Gray, Caleb Mason and Dominic Kunz; one niece, Anne Draper, and one nephew, William Rusby.
Memorial Gathering: 9:30-10:30 a.m., Tuesday, June 18, 2013, at Concordia Village Chapel, 4101 West Iles Springfield, Ill.
Memorial Service: 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, June 18, 2013, at Concordia Village Chapel. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the World War II Scholarship Fund at Springfield High School. This scholarship was founded in memory of the 76 graduates who died during World War II.
