JACKSONVILLE - Staff Sergeant Matthew W. Weikert, 29, of Jacksonville was mortally wounded on Saturday, July 17, 2010, while serving with the U.S. Army near Orgun, Afghanistan.
He was born May 15, 1981 in Sioux City, IA, the son of Richard W. "Dick" and Susan B. Kiel Weikert.
He is survived by his parents of Jacksonville; a son, Jayse Schaecher Weikert of South Jacksonville; two sisters, Meghan Weikert and Melissa Weikert, both of Jacksonville; the mother of his son, Megan Schaecher of South Jacksonville; his girlfriend, Danica Schild of Greenfield; his maternal grandparents, Rev. Wesley and Nell Kiel of Holland, MI; his paternal grandparents, Richard A. "Dick" and Virginia Weikert of Sioux City, IA; five aunts and uncles, Cathy Dartman of Creighton, NE, Kim Weikert-Moner of Georgetown, MA, Steven Kiel (wife, Sheryl) of Longview, WA, Sheryl Mallehan (husband, Dave) of Holland, MI, and Scott Kiel (wife, Cathy) of Bloomington; and numerous cousins.
Matthew was a member of the Jacksonville High School Class of 2000, a former member of the JHS soccer team, and a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Jacksonville. He joined the U.S. Marine Corps in August of 2001 serving three tours in Iraq over four years. He later joined the U.S. Army serving with the 101st Airborne completing a tour in Iraq and was currently deployed in Afghanistan. As a military team leader, Matt was adamant that his personal mission was to properly prepare the soldiers under his command and keep them safe from harm.
In his spare time, Matt enjoyed hunting pheasant with his grandfather, playing golf with his family and friends, and spending time with his son, Jayse.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday at the Buchanan and Cody Funeral Home in Jacksonville, with burial and military honors at Liberty Cemetery, west of Jacksonville. The family will meet friends from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts are suggested to the Weikert Education Fund at Jacksonville Savings Bank.

Hello,
We would like to express our deepest condolences and also let the Weikert Family and friends know that we will be sending Care Packages to troops in Afghanistan this week and we'll be dedicating several of these to your loved one. Each package will carry the name, photo and the hometown of Matthew W. Weikert US Army Sergeant. Prayer Shawls 4 Fallen Soldiers ([email protected]) is an organization with groups throughout the country who strive to send handmade prayer shawls and/ or lap robes to families who have lost a loved one in service to our country. Members of Trindle Spring Lutheran Church in Mechanicsburg, PA would like to honor your son’s sacrifice and memory by sending our prayers and comfort through a shawl which we will mail to you. If you are interested, please contact me at [email protected] with the names and addresses and what they would like to receive. We will send them as soon as possible. Also, if you know of any other families who are grieving the loss of a loved one who died serving our country, please pass along my e-mail address, as our organization can no longer get family contacts through the military. FREEDOM FRIDAY... a silent tribute to honor Matt Weikert and show our support for his family and friends.
Doing this will be quite simple.
Please wear RED WHITE and BLUE on Friday. That's it.
I'll be proudly pinning on a beautiful porcelain flag with a golden eagle that I usually reserve for the 4th of July or Election Day. I'm braiding RW&B bands from embroider floss, for the students I work with to tie around their wrists. When I give them out I will tell them of a brave man who gave his life so they could be free.

to the weikert family. i just wanted to tell you my story of my friendship with matt. i met him in 2006 when i was stationed at fort campbell. i was very new to the army and fresh out of high school. matt was my first and only team leader when i was stationed with 2nd plt, d co 1/187 inf. i met matt when he was just a cpl. in sep of 07 we deployed to iraq. i had some of the best time of my life.we talked about a lot of things, he was most proud of his son which he found out in iraq. we talked non stop about how happy he was about founding out that he was a father. matt was there with us the whole time taking care of me so i can go home to my mother and two more members of our four men team. as i was moving duty station in may of 09 matt took his own time to drive me over 60 miles to the airport, and that was the last time we talked after over 2 and a half years of being my friend.
please accept my condolences
