Bernard Patrick "Bernie" Griffin, Jr.

SPRINGFIELD - Bernard Patrick "Bernie" Griffin, Jr., 80, of Springfield died at 6:38 p.m. on Wednesday, October 31, 2012 at St. John's Hospice.

Bernie was born on December 31, 1931 in Springfield, the son of Bernard Patrick and Bertha Theilken Griffin, Sr. He married Mary Johnson on June 13, 1958 in Springfield.

Bernie was a graduate of Lanphier High School and served in the United States Air Force for four years, serving three of those years in Japan. He was employed as a mail carrier for the U.S. Post Office. Bernie was a die-hard Phillies fan and enjoyed playing golf and visiting with his friends at Bunn Golf Course.

He is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Gary Griffin; and sister, Patricia Griffin.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Griffin of Springfield; two sons, Bernard Patrick (Jasmine) Griffin III of Springfield and Thomas J. (Elizabeth H.) Griffin of Apex, NC; five grandchildren, Randi of Boston, MA, Kelly of Providence, RI, Joshua of Apex, NC, and Jessica and Richard, both of Springfield; one sister, Ursula Watkins of Austin, TX; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation and Funeral Ceremony: Family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until the time of ceremony at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, November 9, 2012 at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield with Rev. Msgr. John R. Ossola, officiating. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery with military honors.
