SPRINGFIELD - Charles J. Horrighs, 86, of Springfield, passed away on Thursday, November 15, 2012 at St. John's Hospice.

Charles was born on November 8, 1926 in Springfield the son of Charles J., Sr. and Goldie Straud Horrighs. He married Betty J. Herchy on May 12, 1947; she preceded him in death on February 3, 2003.

Mr. Horrighs attended Feitshens High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in November 1943. He attained the rank of Gunner's Mate 3rd Class. He was assigned to the USS Raymond which earned 5 Battle Stars in the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign.

He joined the Illinois Army National Guard in November 1946 where he worked for 28 years. He retired in 1985 as a Sergeant Major with over 40 years of military service.

He was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, WWII Victory Medal, Presidential Unit Citation with one Star, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with five Stars, Navy Occupation Medal with Asia Clasp, Armed Forces Reserved Medal, Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal Philippines, Presidential Unit Citation, Philippines Liberation Medal with one star, NCO Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon and three Overseas Bars.

He was also preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by son, Charles A. (Sarah) Horrighs of Springfield; daughter, Rita L. (Calvin) Stambaugh of Springfield; five grandchildren; five great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 5-7:00 p.m. on Monday, November 19, 2012 at Ellinger-Kunz & Park Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 20, 2012 at Ellinger-Kunz & Park Funeral Home with Pastor Dawn Stuemke officiating. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery where the Interveterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County will conduct military honors.
