SPRINGFIELD - Concetta "Connie" J. Capitano, 99, of Springfield, died Tuesday, June 7, 2011. Born January 28, 1912, in Brooklyn, New York, she was the daughter of Angelo and Josephine Moccio Benedetto. On June 26, 1938, she married Nelson J. Capitano.

Mrs. Capitano is survived by a son, Nelson J. Capitano, Jr., Springfield; three grandchildren, Nicholas (Mellissa) Capitano, Ashburn, VA; Michael (Lindsey) Capitano, Springfield, and Kristin Capitano, of Springfield; grandchildren, Gia, Tessa, and Tony Capitano. Mrs. Capitano was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Frank, Alexander, Anthony, Pasquele and Michael; a sister, Mary DeBari; daughter-in-law, Malinda Capitano.

Concetta, formerly of Brooklyn, NY, was a long distance telephone operator and a sales associate for SAKS Fifth Avenue and Gimballs. Mrs. Capitano was a member of Christ the King Church for many years. Connie, as a child, watched her mother cook, and was able to make delicious meals from memory, not a written recipe. At age 90, she won a national recipe contest at Sargento Cheese with "Connie's Italian Chicken". She and her recipe were featured in the food section of the SJR in 2002.

Visitation: Her family will greet friends before the service, from 9-10AM Monday, June 13, at Staab Polk Memorial Home, 8855 State Route 4, Chatham.

Funeral: 10AM, Monday, June 13 at Staab Polk Memorial Home, Chatham, with entombment at Oak Ridge Cemetery, Springfield.
