Captain David Wayne Tungett

MARYLAND- Captain David Wayne Tungett, 56, U.S. Navy retired, of Maryland, son of Leroy Tungett and the late Marilyn Tungett of Springfield, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, December 29, 2012.

A 1977 graduate of Springfield High School, David attended the University of Illinois Champaign/Urbana and earned his bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering. It was there that he embarked on his 30-year naval career as a midshipman in ROTC. He also earned his Master's degree in Electrical Engineering from the Navy postgraduate school in Monterey, Calif.

As a surface warfare officer his ships and duty stations lead him and his family from coast to coast. A highlight of his career was his command of the Beach Master Unit in Little Creek-Norfolk, Virg. His last military assignment was in Washington, D.C. where he was a program manager for foreign military sales. He then began a career in D.C. as a contract consultant traveling world-wide for Booz Allen Hamilton.

Among his numerous Naval awards are the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal (3), Navy Marine Corps Commendation Medal (4), and Navy Marine Corps Achievement Medal.

He was a proud and loving father and also continued the family tradition of Boy Scouting as a den leader, Troop Scout master and helping with Girl Scout activities. Later, in Washington, he continued his support of youth by becoming a referee for high school football.

Recently he had the joy of seeing his son and daughter both get married this past year and the arrival of his grandson, just three weeks ago.

He leaves behind his son, David W. Tungett, Jr. and his wife Karen and his new grandson, Chace William; his daughter, Debbie Tungett Bailey and her husband Peter, and his former wife of 25 years, Lynne Tungett, all of Newport, Rhode Island. He also leaves behind a companion, Marilyn Hyde of Virginia.

Besides his father, Roy Tungett and step-mother, Carol Yeamen Poock Tungett, he leaves his brother, Michael Tungett of Springfield, his sisters, Eleanor Huitt Van Deventer of Springfield, and Linda Hoadley of Atlanta, GA, and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation: Family will receive friends from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 3, 2013 at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield. An additional visitation will be held from 1:00-1:45 p.m. on Friday, January 4, 2013 at Westminster Presbyterian Church.

Funeral Ceremony: 2:00 p.m. on Friday, January 4, 2013 at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 533 S. Walnut St., Springfield, with The Rev. Julie Wells Blythe officiating.

David will be laid to rest beside his mother, Marilyn, and niece Heather Huitt, at Oak Ridge Cemetery following the ceremony, with military honors provided.

Memorial services will be held in Washington, D.C. and Newport, Rhode Island at a later date.
