Dorothy Mae Jones
VIRDEN, IL - Dorothy Mae Jones, 90, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2013, at Sunrise Manor.
Dorothy was born Aug. 3, 1923, the daughter of James D. Pickett and Hattie (Beck) Pickett near New City, Ill. She graduated from Edinburg High School and Browns Business College.
On Jan. 11, 1944, she married Charles C. Jones at the Army Air Corps Base Chapel in Amarillo, Texas. He preceded her in death on June 18, 2001.
Dorothy worked as an accountant for over 30 years retiring from Geo Kruse, Inc. and Smoky Jennings Chevrolet. She, her husband, and her brother James Pickett co-owned Charlie's Car Wash in Virden, Girard, and Taylorville for 28 years. Dorothy and her daughter also ran Pic N Do Ceramics from 1974-1999 where she enjoyed pouring greenware and painting. Bowling was her other hobby she continued until her eyesight forced her to quit.
She was a member of the Thayer United Methodist Church.
She is survived by her daughter, Marcia, and son-in-law, Russell G. Hankins, of Virden; three grandchildren: Dan Wallace (Mary) of Pawnee, Vanessa Wallace (Danny) of Virden, and Rachel Hankins of Chatham. There are four great-grandchildren: Eric, Devon, and Destiny of Pawnee and Isabella of Virden. Also surviving is her brother, Jim Pickett (Gean) of Leesburg, Fla., as well as 12 nieces and nephews.
Services for Dorothy will be Monday, Oct. 28, 2013, at Calvert & Ferry Funeral Home in Virden. Visitation will be 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. with funeral services to begin at 1 p.m., Pastor Chuck Kurfman officiating. Cremation rites will be accorded with burial of ashes at a later date.
Memorials may be directed to the Thayer United Methodist Church or to Macoupin County Animal Shelter.
