CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO - Dr. Edward Joseph Budil, Jr., formerly of Springfield, Ill., died peacefully in his sleep at the Lutheran Home in Cape Girardeau, Mo., in the early morning hours of Nov. 16, 2015. He was 85 years old.
Edward is survived by his children: David Budil of Stoughton, Mass., Melanie Budil of Springfield, Ill., Cynthia Martin of Pekin, Ill., and Jonathan Budil of Cape Girardeau, Mo.; and his five grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Cynthia Budil of Springfield, Ill., and his parents, Edward Sr. and Laura Budil of Hallsville, Texas.
Edward Jr. was born on June 18, 1930, in Elizabeth, N.J., to Edward Sr. and Laura Budil. He became the first member of his family to attend college, paying his way through Yale University on scholarships and by working in the cafeteria line. After graduating in 1951 from Yale with a premedical degree, Edward earned his medical degree from Harvard Medical School in 1954. He spent a year as a surgical intern at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, Mo., before enlisting in the U.S. Army, where he served as a Captain in the Medical Corps in Stuttgart, Germany from 1955-1957. During this time, he married Cynthia Diane Emmerling on Feb. 4, 1956, and they had their first son, David, in 1957. Upon his release from active duty, Edward returned to Barnes Hospital and completed his surgical residency. From 1961-1967, the couple had three more children. In 1961, Edward became a partner in the Springfield Clinic. Edward's skills quickly added to the Clinic's already considerable prestige in vascular surgery, and he helped organize the first Burn Unit at Memorial Medical Center, co-directing it for several years.
Edward was also a member of the St. Louis Surgical Society, and was a Clinical Associate Professor of Surgery at SIU School of Medicine.
In addition to his illustrious career, Edward enjoyed singing in the Springfield Oratorio Choir and in the choir of Christ Episcopal Church. He loved music and theater, especially the patter songs of Gilbert and Sullivan, and the glee club of his Yale alma mater, the Wiffenpoofs.
He had an appetite for reading and other intellectual pursuits, such as chess and bridge. A former Eagle Scout, Edward enjoyed all manner of outdoor activities as well, such as camping, canoeing, sailing, swimming, and skiing, and was one of the first members of the Island Bay Yacht Club.
Edward will be remembered as an engaging, intelligent man, a beloved surgeon, a quick wit, and a devoted husband who visited his wife every day during her long decline from Alzheimer's disease. He was a supportive father who enabled each of his children to pursue their own paths and dreams.
A memorial service is scheduled for 1 p.m., Saturday. Nov. 21, 2015, at Christ Episcopal Church in Springfield, with a reception to follow at the same location. The Rev. Dr. Gregory A. Tournoux will preside. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Edward's life.
Flowers and condolences can be sent to: Christ Episcopal Church, 611 E. Jackson St., Springfield, IL 62701.

I have fond memories of Dr. BUDIL. WHhenI was a nursing student I remember him visiting his beloved wife each day. I also assisted him & his sweet mother through her insurance dilemmas while working @ Springfield Clinic. I truly enjoyed their relationship. Peace & Prayers to your family.

There are no words to express our sadness at the passing of Dr. Budil. His kindness and professionalism to our family for over 20 years, while we lived in Illinois, and even a few visits and surgeries after our move to Georgia, will always be remembered. When we speak of him it is always with fondness.
