George E. Rogers

PETERSBURG - George Elbert Rogers, 85, of Petersburg, passed away on August 15 2012, at Memorial Medical Center. George was born on December 6, 1926 in Greensburg, KY, the son of John and Anna Rogers. He married Christina Earleen Albert on November 30, 1946.

George moved to Pleasant Plains at the age of nine and later moved to Springfield where he worked as a bell hop at the St. Nick Hotel. He move to Petersburg in 1947 and began working for Allis Charmers. Later that year, he began working for E.S. Mitchell at his service station. After 10 years he bought the station for himself and operated it for 55 years.

George was very involved in the Petersburg community. He coached Little League baseball for many years, was past president of the Petersburg Jaycees and helped build Jaycee Park. George was a Rotarian for many years and had been recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow. He was a member of the Petersburg Fire Dept. for many years and served as fire chief for over 20. George was awarded Petersburg's First Citizen Award in 2000. He was a diehard Cubs fan and loved to water ski. George's biggest joy in life though, was helping people day and night.

George is survived by his wife, Earleen, of Petersburg; one son, Dave (Wilma) Rogers of Petersburg; two sisters, Marie Everhardt of Holland, OH and Audrey Jasmon of Springfield; one brother, Jimmy (Carolyn) Ford of Mechanicsburg; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by three sisters and one brother.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 18, 2012 at 2:00 pm at Salisbury Christian Church. Visitation will be on Friday, August 17, 2012 from 4 to 7 pm at the Hurley Funeral Home in Petersburg. Cremation rites will follow services.
