George Edward Payne

LOAMI- George Edward Payne, 87, of Loami, died at 4:03 p.m. on Sunday, April 21, 2013 at Memorial Medical Center.

George was born February 10, 1926 in Springfield, the son of Alonzo and Ethel Wethington Payne. He married Loretta Carol White on July 25, 1953.

George was a graduate of Loami Grade School and attended New Berlin High School, before serving on an LST in the Pacific with the United States Navy in WWII. He later worked as a truck driver for Scherer Freight Lines. George was a member of Loami Christian Church where he had served as Sunday School Superintendent, a Deacon, an Elder, and Chairman of the Board. George was also a member of Teamsters 916.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters, Mary Withrow, Mae Royce, and Elizabeth Mitchell.

He is survived by his wife, Carol Payne of Loami; two sons, Brian (wife, Barbara) Payne, and Tom (companion, Alice Christensen) Payne, all of Springfield; two daughters, Joni Payne of Westlake, OH, and Sharon (husband, Rick) Sonnemaker of Petersburg; two grandchildren, Bethany and Brandon (wife, Brooke) Sonnemaker; three great-grandchildren, Bryce, Braelyn and Brody Sonnemaker; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation: Family will receive friends from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 24, 2013 at Loami Christian Church, 309 E. Center St., Loami.

Funeral Ceremony: 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 25, 2013 at Loami Christian Church, with Pastor Charles Duggins officiating. Burial will follow at Sulphur Springs Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to: Loami Fire Department and Rescue Squad, 101 N. Main St., Loami, IL 62661.
