Gordon MANNING Obituary

Gordon "Gene" Manning

PAWNEE - Gordon "Gene" Manning, 86, lifelong resident of Pawnee, was called home on Saturday, May 11, 2013, peacefully at his home surrounded by his three children and wife of 62 plus years.

On April 25, 1927, Gene was welcomed into the world by his parents, Claude and Helen Manning. Gene was the first of many grandchildren adding to the Manning clan. He spent his childhood working with his father and uncles in their many entrepreneurial pursuits, including real estate, private investigation, and livestock.

Gene married the love of his life, Lois "Jeanne" Murphy on September 2, 1950, and spent the next 62 plus years building a family of which he was so very proud. Gene and Jeanne raised Brent, Bill, and Marla, who, in time, added loving spouses to Gene's ever-growing family. Brent and Cathy, Bill and Christine, and Marla and Marc eventually gave Gene five granddaughters to dote on, cheer for, and caution on the hazards of running in the house.

Throughout his life, Gene served his community on the Pawnee School Board for 12 years, as a Boy Scout leader, Khoury League baseball coach, a charter member of the Sangchris Waterfowl Association and a charter member of the Sangchris Ducks Unlimited Committee. He attended all Pawnee sponsored baseball, basketball, volleyball, softball and football games. Gene was an avid outdoorsman. Along with his sons, son-in-law, and an assortment of friends, Gene struck fear into the hearts of fish, fowl, and things with fur from Southern Illinois to Manitoba, Canada.

After retiring from the State of Illinois, Department of Transportation, District 6 Materials Lab, where he worked for 37 plus years, Gene focused his attention on his great loves – his family and the outdoors. He loved singing to his grandchildren, watching the girls and their friends (whom he considered like granddaughters themselves) play volleyball and softball, and spending time with family and friends at Common Thread Farms in Schuyler County.

Gene is survived by his wife Lois "Jeanne" (Murphy) Manning; his three devoted children, Brent (Cathy) of Somonauk, IL, Bill (Christine) of Pawnee, and Marla (Marc) Bourne of Divernon; five loving granddaughters, Amanda (Carl) Kessler of Auburn, Sarah (John) Kerley of Springfield, Jessica (Matt) Saey of Westmont, Jennifer (Nick) Myers of Springfield, and Rylie Bourne of Divernon; and three spectacular great- grandchildren, Clayton Kessler, and Samantha and Jack Kerley.

Visitation will be Tuesday, May 14, 2013, from 4 until 7 p.m. at Bramley Funeral Home, Divernon. Funeral services will be Wednesday at the funeral home at 10 a.m. with Rev. Dr. Wayne P. Hoffman officiating. Burial will be at David Brunk Cemetery on East Lake Drive with Rev. Lamoin Lytle officiating.

Memorials may be made to the or Ducks Unlimited.
