Howard L. Hale
WAVERLY - Howard L. "Slug" Hale, age 93, of Waverly, Il. died Thursday morning (February 21, 2013) at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield, Il.
He was born January 2, 1920 in Waverly, Il. son of the late Raymond and Myrtle Garman Hale.
He married Helen J. Sadler on October 2, 1943 in Waverly, Il. and she preceded him in death on December 7, 2006.
Surviving is one daughter, Pamela Robinson and husband Robert of Springfield, Il.; four sons, Larry Hale and wife Barbara J. and Donald Hale and wife Barbara A. all of Springfield, Il., Gary Hale and wife Peggy of Longview, Texas, and James Hale and wife Angie of Athens, Il.; ten grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; a sister, Alberta Hale; and a brother, Lloyd Hale.
Mr. Hale was a maintenance foreman for the U.S. Government as well as a former employee of Sangamo Electric. He was a Army veteran of WW II and was in the Battle of the Bulge and was a made a honorary citizen of Veilsalm, Belgium and Bastone, Belgium in 2012 He was a lifetime member of the V.F.W. He was well known for canning pickles and peppers and giving them to his friends.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday (February 24, 2013) at the Neece-Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Waverly, Il. Burial will be in Waverly East Cemetery where graveside military rites will be conducted by the Waverly American Legion Post. Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
