James William "Bill" Allen

SPRINGFIELD - James William "Bill" Allen, 88, of Springfield passed away May 16, 2012 at his home with his loving family at his side. Bill was born May 30, 1923 in Lincoln, IL, the son of Sidney and Margaret (Toole) Allen.

Bill graduated from Springfield High School in 1941, where he excelled in track. After graduating high school, he proudly served our country in the U.S. Navy in WWII and in the Korean Conflict. He married Ruth Bonnett on June 1, 1951 in Key West, FL, while he was stationed there. After his service to our country, he came back to Springfield and worked as an electrical design engineer for Sangamo Electric and then for the Illinois Capitol Development Board. Bill was a fan baseball and football, always rooting for the underdog. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed spending his summers at Otter Lake. Bill was a member of Jerome Methodist Church and a former member of the Springfield Elks Club. He enjoyed dancing and Big Band music and was a member of the Aztec Club.

Bill is survived by Ruth, his loving wife of 60 years; his daughter Cindy (Fred) Coombe, son Billy (Heidi) Allen, two grandsons, Mark (fiancé Lauren Riggs) and Eric Coombe, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his sister, Helen Allen Shumate.

Visitation will be held on Friday, May 18th, from 4-7 pm, at Bisch and Son Funeral Home, 505 E Allen St., Springfield, IL 62703. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 19th, at 10 am at the funeral home with Rev. Paul Black conducting the services. Burial will follow the services in the Veterans Section of Oak Ridge Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in his name can be made to the Land of Lincoln Honor Flight Program, 57 Country Place, Springfield, IL 62703, or to Memorial Home Hospice Sharing Wishes Fund, 1 Memorial Plaza Box 61, Springfield, IL 62781-0001.
