Joan Dorothy Hudson Cazel

SPRINGFIELD - Joan Dorothy Hudson Cazel, 81, of Springfield, passed away, Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2013, at her home with her family at her side.

Joan was born in Chicago June 22, 1932, the daughter of John Jones and Linda Madeline (Panozzo) Hudson. She married Gerald Charles Cazel on February 23, 1952, in Chicago. They moved to Springfield in 1963.

Joan began her secondary education at Chicago Teachers College. After her children had entered school, she completed her degree at Sangamon State University, as a member of the first class to graduate from SSU. She taught (substitute teaching and home schooling) until starting her career with the State of Illinois. She retired from her position as a Disability Adjudicator with the State of Illinois.

Jerry and Joan joined St. John's Lutheran Church shortly after moving to Springfield. Joan was an active member of Women of the ELCA, Congregational Council, Miriam Circle and the Christian Education Committee. She also worked with children's education and was instrumental in establishing St. John's Lutheran Pre-school. She also participated in the Grasshoppers golf club, the Tuesday Morning Ladies Golf League, the American Association of University Women, Nightingale Circle of the King's Daughters Home, Newcomers, and many other community organizations and social clubs.

She is survived by her husband, Gerald C. Cazel; brother, Jack (Janette, Ph.D) Hudson, Ph.D, of Charlottesville, Va.; daughters, Dorothy "Thi" (Mike) Bowden of Springfield, Janet Cazel of Springfield, Nancy (Bradley) Campbell of Willisburg, Ky., Pam (Mark P.) Rodgers of Springfield and Sue (Ray) Zientara of Oakley; grandchildren, Shannon (Spencer) Marshall , Matt (Aster) Bowden, Rachel (Jason) Kozemczak, Jared Bowden, Hannah Gibson, Karmen Goodrich, Katherine Herman, Aaron Herman, Marc Rodgers, Jessica Rodgers and Sarah Rodgers; 17 great-grandchildren; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

Visitation for friends and family will be held from 4-7 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 24, 2013, at St. John's Lutheran Church, 2477 W. Washington St., Springfield. Funeral Services will be held 11 a.m., Monday, Nov. 25, 2013, at the church with Pastor Greg Busboom officiating.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to St. John's Lutheran Church, 2477 W. Washington St., Springfield, IL 62702. The family is being served by Boardman-Smith Funeral Chapel. (www.boardman-smith.net).
