Kenneth L. YOUNG Obituary

Kenneth L. Young

SPRINGFIELD- Kenneth L. Young, 79, passed away on Sunday morning, April 21, 2013 at home. Kenny was born February 15, 1934, in Springfield, the son of Henry and Pearl Smith Young. He married Dolores Steinmacher in 1955 and they had five children who survive him.

Kenny retired from the State of Illinois, working in the Executive Mansion for the terms of Governors Thompson, Edgar and briefly Ryan. He was known for his engaging and informative tours of a grand house, full of history, and for his vast knowledge about Abraham Lincoln. Many people from all over the world had the pleasure of his guided walk through history. He also worked at Sangamo Electric, like his father before him, serving as a union steward as well as on the line until they moved from Springfield. Never shying away from work that was needed, he worked part time at Watt Brothers Drug Store and later as a janitor in the old IBM building.

Kenny found no greater pleasure than in his children, and that was surpassed by his delight in his grandchildren. His final wishes and prayers were for their success and well-being. He appreciated any good joke (though he had many of his own) and defending personal freedoms was a passion he held fiercely. His heroes were WW II veterans.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Howard, sisters Betty, Ruby and June, and his second wife, Evalyn.

Kenny is survived by his five children, Sue Young, Carol McFarland, Kenny Young, Mary Young (husband, Andy Egizi), Scott (Jennifer) Young; six grand-children, Rob (Anne), Luke, Jade and Logan McFarland, Rachel and Scott Jr Young; one great-grandchild, Finley Daniel McFarland; sisters Lois Cook and Norma Friedman all of Springfield and many extended family and friends.

Visitation: Kenny's family will welcome you to honor him on Thursday, April 25, 2013 from 4- 7 pm, at Staab Funeral Home, 1109 S. 5th St, Springfield.

Funeral Service: His funeral ceremony will be 1:00 pm Friday, April 26, 2013 at Staab Funeral Home with Pastor Steve Nordyke officiating. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery where military honors will be conducted by the Sangamon County Interveterans Burial Detail.

Memorial contributions can be made to: Sangamon County Interveterans Burial Detail, Land of Lincoln Honor Flights or Inner City Mission – Springfield.

Death is not extinguishing the light; it is putting out the lamp because the dawn has come.
